Inspired by the land that holds us: green skincare with every treatment
By Meeghan Mackenzie, RMT, CLT with Krizia Canvas · March 11, 2024 · 5 min read
Every massage and lymphatic drainage treatment at Renu uses ethically made, plant-based skincare from Communion Botanicals, a family-run company in Nelson, BC. We chose them because green skincare is more than a trend: it is a commitment to ingredients that nourish the body from the outside in while you heal from the inside out, and to a supplier whose values match ours.
The land that holds us
In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory. Acknowledging the land is a traditional custom of Indigenous peoples when welcoming outsiders onto their land and into their homes. Nature is the source of our medicines, and she provides them abundantly when we quietly observe and learn from her. As stewards we are entrusted to tread lightly and honour the bond between people and the Earth.
What green skincare means
Green skincare integrates sustainable, eco-friendly and organic practices into a routine, with a purpose beyond beauty: a connection with the earth that nourishes the body while it heals. Communion Botanicals was founded by Ayla Rose Fahey after a chronic illness led her from the limits of allopathic medicine to nearly a decade of herbal study and apprenticeship. From a first collection made in her home kitchen to an artisanal studio in Nelson, the company is built on environmental responsibility, ethical sourcing and pure, effective botanical ingredients.
In practice that means plant-based oils and cruelty-free balms on the table, such as the Chamomile and Yarrow Soothing Skin Balm we recommend for skin care in lymphedema management. Yarrow is an astringent, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial herb traditionally used as a topical wound-healer.
Nature-inspired bodywork
Massage and lymphatic drainage already mirror nature: the grounding of a fascial release, the river-like flow of the lymphatic system. Like rainfall cleansing the soil, lymphatic massage encourages the flow of lymph that carries waste out of the body’s internal terrain. A short walk in a park or garden before your session aligns your energy with the earth and prepares the mind and body for a more profound treatment.
Keeping your lymphatic system healthy between sessions
Simple daily habits keep lymph moving and extend the benefit of every treatment.
- Drink plenty of water through the day.
- Move regularly; walking and cycling stimulate lymphatic flow and prevent congestion.
- Eat foods rich in antioxidants and nutrients: fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.
- Dry brush before showering to stimulate drainage.
- Prioritize relaxation and stress management, such as deep breathing or meditation, to reduce inflammation.
Two homes
We have two homes: the Earth and our body. It is our duty to take care of both. Let nature be your guide, and may each treatment bring you closer to the radiant, balanced skin and body you deserve.
