When should you book post-op lymphatic drainage?
When should you book post-op lymphatic drainage? Before surgery: reserve the first two to four weeks around your surgeon's start date, then adjust.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
Book before your surgery, not after it. Once your surgeon has told you when lymphatic work may begin, reserve the first two to four weeks of appointments so they are waiting for you, and treat the dates as pencilled in rather than fixed. Swelling peaks in the first couple of days and many plans call for several sessions a week, so trying to find openings while you are sore and in compression is the hard way to do it.
The best time to book post-op lymphatic drainage is while you still feel well. This page is about the logistics: when to make the bookings, how many to make, and how to pick session lengths. The medical question of the right start date belongs to your surgeon, and we cover it separately in when you can start lymphatic drainage after surgery.
Why booking ahead matters
The first weeks after surgery are when you need appointments most and feel least able to arrange them. Three published facts explain why.
- Swelling arrives fast. The Aesthetic Society says swelling after liposuction peaks around 48 hours after surgery and mostly settles within two to three weeks, with some residual swelling possible for up to four months.
- Plans call for frequent visits. An article from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) describes lymphatic massage starting the day after surgery and continuing several times a week for two months. A physiotherapy clinic’s protocol describes two to three sessions a week in weeks two to four.
- You will have limited mobility. ASPS recovery guidance for week one is to significantly limit activity, and you will be in a compression garment for weeks.
Put together, that means several appointments a week falling exactly when you are least able to hunt for openings. The ASPS also suggests clearing errands before surgery so that recovery is rest. Your lymphatic bookings belong on that pre-surgery list.
A booking timeline that works
Here is how we suggest sequencing it. Your surgeon’s instructions override every step.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| When your surgery date is confirmed | Ask your surgeon when lymphatic work may start and whether drains must be out first |
| Two or more weeks before surgery | Book the first two to four weeks of post-op sessions around that start date |
| At the same time | Arrange rides for the first appointments, since you may not be able to drive |
| The week before surgery | Optional pre-op visit to meet your therapist and confirm the plan |
| After each early session | Adjust the next bookings with your therapist as swelling changes |
| Around weeks three to four | Review frequency: many plans move toward weekly visits |
The physiotherapy protocol we cite describes week one sessions only if the surgeon clears early treatment and drains have been removed, then the intensive phase, then weekly sessions from about the second month, with some people moving to monthly. Treat that as an example of the shape, not a prescription.
How many appointments to reserve
Reserve the intensive weeks, not the whole course. Booking two to four weeks at a time gives you security without locking you into a schedule your body may not need. Recovery varies a great deal, and the ASPS notes that individual experiences differ even within the common first-to-third-week window of bruising, swelling and firmness.
A practical approach:
- reserve two or three sessions a week for the first block, matched to the frequency your surgeon suggests;
- leave room to drop a visit if you are progressing well, or to add one if swelling flares;
- book the next block at a mid-point appointment, once you and your therapist can see how things are going.

Choosing a session length at Renu
Pick the length that matches how much area there is to cover and how comfortable you are on the table. At Renu, pre and post-op lymphatic drainage is booked in these lengths:
| Session | Price |
|---|---|
| Post-op lymphatic drainage, 30 minutes | $105 |
| Post-op lymphatic drainage, 45 minutes | $115 |
| Post-op lymphatic drainage, 60 minutes | $140 |
| Multiple surgeries, 90 minutes | $210 |
Shorter visits can suit the first days, when lying down, turning and getting up again is tiring. A 60-minute session gives time for one surgical region plus the areas that drain it. The 90-minute row exists for people who have had more than one area operated on, such as liposuction combined with a tummy tuck. You can mix lengths across your block; there is no need to book every appointment the same.
Fitting appointments around your recovery
We are open seven days a week: Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Weekend and evening times are often the easiest to match with the person driving you, because the ASPS advises arranging someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay at least the first night, and early on you may also need a ride to your sessions. Our answer on driving to lymphatic drainage after surgery covers that in detail.
Book through Jane, our online system, or call 403-270-2111 if you would rather talk the plan through. If your surgeon’s start date is still uncertain, book from the earliest likely date and move appointments later if needed; that is easier than trying to find several openings at short notice.
When to cancel and call your surgeon instead
A booked session is never a reason to ignore a warning sign. Contact your surgeon before your next appointment if you have:
- a fever, or wound redness, heat or discharge;
- pain that is extreme or long-lasting, which the Aesthetic Society says should go to your surgeon;
- swelling and pain in one calf or thigh;
- shortness of breath or chest pain, which needs emergency care.
Postponing a lymphatic appointment costs a few days. Getting a complication seen early protects your whole recovery.
Questions people ask
How far ahead should I book post-op lymphatic drainage?
As soon as your surgery date is confirmed and your surgeon has given you a start date for lymphatic work. That usually means booking two or more weeks ahead, which gives you the best choice of times and therapists in the busiest part of recovery.
What if my surgery date moves?
Move your lymphatic appointments with it. Surgical dates shift for all sorts of reasons, so think of your post-op bookings as a block that slides together. Let the clinic know as soon as you hear, so the times can go to someone else.
Should every session be the same length?
Not necessarily. Some people prefer shorter visits in the first days, when getting on and off the table is tiring, and longer ones once they are moving more easily. Your therapist can suggest a length at each visit.
Do I book post-op sessions under a different service?
At Renu, recovery appointments are booked under pre and post-op lymphatic drainage in Jane, where you choose 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or 90 minutes if you have had more than one area treated.
