Manual lymphatic drainage for Chestermere clients: lymphedema and lipedema care about 23 to 25 km away in NW Calgary, with a Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read

Renu is about 25 km from Chestermere by the Trans-Canada Highway and 16 Avenue, or about 23 km by 17 Avenue SE and Memorial Drive, in West Hillhurst in NW Calgary. Chestermere clients usually come for clinical manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema, lipedema or long-standing swelling, guided by Meeghan Mackenzie, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist and Certified Compression Fitter. Because that care works as a series, plan for repeat visits, using weekday evenings until 8:30 pm and weekends.

Chestermere clients who need manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema, lipedema or swelling that will not settle can reach Renu in about 25 km, almost all of it on one road. We are in West Hillhurst in NW Calgary, and this kind of care is guided by Meeghan Mackenzie, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist. Because clinical lymphatic care is a series rather than a single appointment, the real question is whether the trip works week after week. This page is meant to help you decide.

Two routes from Chestermere

The simplest drive is the Trans-Canada Highway straight west from Chestermere, which becomes 16 Avenue as it enters Calgary, then south on 19 Street NW. From Chestermere City Hall that is about 25 km with very few turns, which is easy to repeat when you are coming in weekly.

Route Main roads Distance
Highway 1 Chestermere Boulevard, Trans-Canada Highway, 16 Avenue NE and NW, 19 Street NW about 25 km
Along the river Chestermere Boulevard, 17 Avenue SE, Memorial Drive SE and NW, 19 Street NW about 22.7 km

Distances come from OpenStreetMap routing. We leave out drive times on purpose, because they change with the hour and the weather. Chestermere sits on Calgary’s eastern edge around Chestermere Lake, so either way you cross the city from east to west. Street parking on 19 Street is free when you arrive.

Clinical lymphatic drainage, not a spa treatment

Manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema or lipedema is part of a medical plan. A relaxing lymphatic massage is a different thing. Cleveland Clinic describes the main use of manual lymphatic drainage as relieving lymphedema, most often after breast cancer surgery, and also lists lymphedema linked to chronic venous insufficiency, injury and lipedema. The NHS describes lymphedema as a long-term condition managed with decongestive therapy: compression garments, specialized massage, skin care and exercise together.

That is why the training of the person guiding your care matters. At Renu, Meeghan Mackenzie:

  • has been a Registered Massage Therapist since 2005;
  • is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist through the Academy of Lymphatic Studies;
  • built her foundation in the Vodder and Földi methods between 2011 and 2014, with advanced training at the Chikly Health Institute;
  • is a Certified Compression Fitter.

If you are deciding between a general RMT and a lymphedema-trained therapist, our page on RMT vs Certified Lymphedema Therapist lays out the difference.

Sessions that suit a Chestermere series

Choose the session by your condition and how much of your body is involved. These are the lymphedema, lipedema and lymphatic sessions most relevant to clients coming from Chestermere.

Session Length Price
Lipedema management 30 min $105
Lipedema management, full body 60 min $140
Compression fitting 30 min $25
Classic lymphatic drainage massage 30 min $95
Classic lymphatic drainage massage 45 min $105
Classic lymphatic drainage massage 60 min $130

A few planning points:

  • Lipedema. The NHS describes lipedema as an abnormal build-up of fat, mainly in the legs, that is often painful, tender or heavy and bruises easily, and lists compression among the things that help. Lipedema management comes as a 30-minute session or a 60-minute full-body session, and we will suggest which fits after assessing you. Read your first lipedema treatment before you come.
  • Lymphedema. Longer classic sessions give time to clear the node areas before the limb itself. Complete decongestive therapy is described on our complete decongestive therapy page.
  • Compression. Cleveland Clinic advises that if you wear compression garments, you keep wearing them, because massage does not replace them. A fitting with Meeghan is 30 minutes; see what to expect at a compression fitting, and check AADL funding for compression garments before you buy.

If you are coming in after surgery rather than for lymphedema or lipedema, our post-op lymphatic drainage page is the better starting point.

Fitting a series around a 25 km drive

Repeat visits are easier when they are booked as a block. Our hours give you two kinds of window:

  • Weekday evenings, until 8:30 pm Monday to Friday, so you can come in after work and head home along Highway 1 once the day is done.
  • Weekends, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, for people who would rather not drive in on a workday at all.

Booking several appointments at once through Jane, or by calling 403-270-2111, makes it easier to hold a regular day and time. Ask at the same time about pairing a compression fitting with a treatment visit, so one trip covers both.

When to see your doctor first

Some symptoms need a doctor before any lymphatic work. Cleveland Clinic lists conditions where lymphatic drainage is avoided: blood clots or deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis or other infection, fever, heart disease, kidney failure and stroke. It is not done directly over cancerous tissue or skin damaged by radiation therapy.

Get medical help promptly, and postpone your appointment, if:

  • the skin of a swollen limb turns red and feels hot, the swelling increases or you have a fever, which the NHS lists as signs of cellulitis needing antibiotics;
  • a leg becomes swollen, red, hot and painful with flu-like symptoms;
  • swelling appears in an arm or leg for the first time and you have not yet been assessed.

The NHS notes that lymphedema that is not treated usually gets worse over time, so new swelling is worth a doctor’s visit early rather than late.

Questions people ask

How far is Renu from Chestermere?

About 25 km from Chestermere's city hall along the Trans-Canada Highway, which becomes 16 Avenue, then south on 19 Street NW. The 17 Avenue SE and Memorial Drive route is a little shorter, at about 22.7 km. Time depends on traffic, so we only give distances.

Is lymphatic massage the same as manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema?

The hand technique is related, but care for lymphedema or lipedema is planned around a diagnosis, compression and a series of visits. At Renu that clinical work is guided by Meeghan Mackenzie, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

Can I get fitted for compression garments at the same clinic?

Yes. Meeghan is a Certified Compression Fitter, and a compression fitting is a 30-minute appointment for $25. When you book, ask whether a fitting can sit next to a treatment so one trip covers both.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition and how your swelling responds, and Cleveland Clinic notes that results may not show right away. We will give you an honest plan after the first visit rather than a fixed number up front.
