By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
A classic MLD massage at Renu is a manual lymphatic drainage session for general swelling, fluid retention or recovery, booked at 30 minutes ($95), 45 minutes ($105) or 60 minutes ($130). It is done with flat hands and about five grams of pressure, roughly the weight of a nickel, by Registered Massage Therapists trained in the Vodder or Chikly methods. If your swelling follows surgery or comes from lymphedema, a post-op session or complete decongestive therapy is the better booking.
What a classic MLD massage is
A classic MLD massage is manual lymphatic drainage on its own, without deep muscle work, firm contouring strokes or machines. Lymph is the clear fluid that carries waste and immune cells back toward the lymph nodes, and MLD encourages it along. At Renu our therapists use flat hands and about five grams of pressure, roughly the weight of a nickel, in slow, wave-like movements that stretch the skin rather than press into muscle.
The Cleveland Clinic describes the order of work: the therapist first stimulates the lymph node areas, such as the neck, armpits and groin, and then moves excess fluid from swollen tissue toward those nodes so it can be reabsorbed. That order is why a classic session often begins at your neck and collarbones even if your ankles are the problem. Our page on why lymphatic drainage pressure is so light explains the anatomy behind the gentle touch.
Who books it, and who should book something else
The classic session is for swelling and fluid that are not tied to a recent operation or a lymphedema diagnosis. People typically come for puffy legs and ankles after long days on their feet, a heavy, congested feeling, swelling after an injury once a doctor has ruled out anything serious, or simply to rest their nervous system. The Cleveland Clinic lists chronic venous insufficiency, fibromyalgia, lipedema, rheumatoid arthritis and injuries among the conditions lymphatic drainage is used for.
Two other bookings exist for a reason:
- After surgery. Healing tissue, incisions, drains and garments change the plan. Book post-op lymphatic drainage instead, which follows a staged recovery plan.
- Lymphedema. Diagnosed or suspected lymphedema is managed with complete decongestive therapy with Meeghan Mackenzie, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist.
If you want a firmer massage for tight muscles and some lymphatic work in the same visit, the massage and lymphatic drainage combination is built for that.
Choosing 30, 45 or 60 minutes
Length decides how much ground the therapist can cover after the opening work at the neck and trunk. Because MLD clears the pathways closest to the nodes before it reaches the swollen area, a short session leaves less time for the area itself.
| Length | Price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 30 min | $95 | One focused area, or a top-up between longer sessions |
| 45 min | $105 | One region worked thoroughly, such as both legs, or the face and neck |
| 60 min | $130 | A full sequence when fluid feels widespread, or a first visit |
If you are unsure, start with 60 minutes. Your therapist can tell you afterward whether a shorter booking would cover what you need next time. There is more on cost on how much lymphatic drainage massage costs in Calgary.
Vodder-trained and Chikly-trained therapists
Several of our Registered Massage Therapists provide classic MLD, and their training comes from the two best-known schools:
- Meeghan Mackenzie, RMT and Certified Lymphedema Therapist, built her early lymphatic training from 2011 to 2014 on both the Vodder method and the Földi method, then went on to advanced protocols at the Chikly Health Institute.
- Leah Buschau, RMT, holds Vodder Level One certification in manual lymphatic drainage.
- Sasha Bernard, RMT, trained and certified in Lymphatic Drainage Therapy through the Chikly Health Institute.
- Monica Von Gaza, RMT, lists lymphatic massage among her credentials.
Does the school matter? For general swelling, the evidence suggests careful technique matters more than the brand. A 2022 randomized trial of 30 women with cellulite after thigh liposuction compared Vodder and Casley-Smith MLD, each given three times a week for eight weeks with bandaging. Both groups improved significantly and neither method beat the other.
What you should feel
You should feel almost nothing beyond a soft, rhythmic stretch of the skin. MLD is not meant to hurt, and if it does, it is not lymphatic drainage. Many people drift off. A 2021 randomized trial of 66 healthy adults aged 40 to 65 found that 45 minutes of lymphatic drainage therapy lowered a spinal reflex measure (the H-reflex) that the authors read as reduced nervous system activity, compared with lying still for the same time. Heart rate variability and a saliva stress marker did not change, so the calming effect should not be overstated.
To prepare, drink water, wear loose clothing and skip heavy lotions or oils so the therapist’s hands can move your skin. Afterward, some people feel tired or need the washroom more. The Cleveland Clinic notes that fatigue, headaches or nausea can follow, though these are uncommon.
When to check with your doctor first
Lymphatic drainage is gentle, but moving fluid is not safe for every body. The Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding it if you have blood clots or deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis or another infection, fever, heart disease, kidney failure or a recent stroke, and says therapists will not work directly over cancerous tissue or skin damaged by radiation.
See a doctor before booking if swelling is new and in one leg only, comes with pain, warmth or redness in the calf, comes with breathlessness, or appears suddenly with no clear reason. NCCIH also cautions against using massage to put off seeing a health care provider about a medical problem. Once you know the cause, we can help you choose the right session at our West Hillhurst clinic, where there is free street parking on 19 Street.
Questions people ask
Is MLD the same as a lymphatic drainage massage?
Yes. MLD stands for manual lymphatic drainage, and at Renu the session is listed as the classic lymphatic drainage massage. The word classic separates it from the firmer Brazilian style offered through BodyTox by Renu.
Does it matter whether my therapist trained in Vodder or Chikly?
For general swelling, probably not much. A randomized trial comparing the Vodder and Casley-Smith methods after thigh liposuction found both worked and neither did better than the other, which suggests careful technique matters more than the school's name.
Can MLD help me relax even if I am not swollen?
Many people find it deeply calming. In a 2021 randomized trial of 66 healthy adults, 45 minutes of lymphatic drainage therapy lowered a spinal reflex measure the authors read as reduced nervous system activity, though heart rate variability and a saliva stress marker did not change.
Can I book a classic MLD massage if I have lymphedema?
You can, but it may not be enough on its own. Lymphedema is usually managed with complete decongestive therapy, which adds compression, skin care and exercise to MLD, and at Renu that is provided by Meeghan Mackenzie, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist.
