By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
Lipedema massage at Renu is gentle manual lymphatic drainage for lipedema, booked as a 30-minute lipedema management session ($105) or a 60-minute full-body session ($140) with Meeghan Mackenzie, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist. It aims at the pain, heaviness, swelling and tenderness that come with lipedema, alongside well-fitted compression and regular movement. It does not remove lipedema fat, which is why we frame it as care for comfort and mobility.
What lipedema massage can and cannot do
Lipedema massage is gentle manual lymphatic drainage aimed at the symptoms of lipedema, not the fat itself. Lipedema is an abnormal build-up of fat in the legs and sometimes the arms, usually on both sides equally, and the NHS is clear that it is not caused by being overweight. What tends to bring people to us is not the shape of their legs so much as how they feel: painful, heavy, tender to touch and quick to bruise.
The Lipedema Foundation lists the goals of lipedema treatment as managing inflammation, reducing fibrosis, decreasing fat tissue, improving lymphatic flow, increasing mobility, minimizing fatigue and managing pain. Manual lymphatic drainage and compression are conservative treatments aimed at several of those, especially pain, lymphatic flow and comfort. They do not dissolve lipedema fat. We would rather say that plainly at the start than have you hope for something the treatment does not do.
There is some evidence that the bulk can change. In a 2020 randomized trial of 30 women with stage 2 to 3 lipedema, six manual lymphatic drainage treatments reduced limb size, and adding low-frequency vibration therapy reduced it considerably more, with better quality of life. Renu does not offer vibration therapy, and the study was small, but it does show limb volume can change with conservative care. More on the research is on does lymphatic drainage help lipedema.
Choosing 30 minutes or the full body
Both sessions are with Meeghan Mackenzie, RMT, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist, who has more than 14 years of continued education in lymphatic studies.
| Session | Length | Price | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lipedema management | 30 min | $105 | One region, such as the lower legs, or regular maintenance |
| Lipedema management, full body | 60 min | $140 | Legs, hips, arms and trunk together, or a first visit |
| Compression fitting | 30 min | $25 | Being measured for, or refitted with, lipedema garments |
Lipedema rarely stays in one place. Renu’s own description of it is symmetrical fat build-up in the legs, hips, arms and trunk, with pain, swelling and easy bruising, so many people start with the full-body session and use the 30-minute one for focused follow-ups. Our page on your first lipedema treatment walks through the first visit, and lipedema treatment cost helps you plan a budget.
Compression is the other half
Compression is the treatment you wear every day between sessions. The NHS lists compression stockings or bandages among the measures that reduce pain and discomfort, and the Lipedema Foundation stresses that garments should be tailored to the person, because there are many types, sizes and strengths.
Meeghan is also a Certified Compression Fitter, so the same person who treats your legs can measure them. A 30-minute compression garment fitting costs $25, and garments are ordered through medical suppliers such as Juzo Canada. Styles that suit lipedema, including flat-knit and leggings, are compared on compression garments for lipedema.
Skin care belongs in the routine too. The NHS lists moisturising the skin among the measures that help with lipoedema, which matters in Calgary’s dry winter air, when skin under a garment can become tight and itchy. Check which lotions your garment’s manufacturer allows, since some products can affect the fabric; our answer on lotion before compression has the detail.
Movement that tends to help
Movement supports what happens on the table. The Lipedema Foundation’s usual exercise recommendations are walking, aquatic exercise of any kind, Pilates, cycling and yoga. These are low-impact, and many people find that the water takes the weight off sore legs.
Calgary makes some of this easy. The Bow River pathway runs a short distance from our West Hillhurst clinic and is flat enough for walking or an easy ride, and on icy winter days a pool session keeps you moving without the risk of falling. As part of our lymphedema and lipedema care, your therapist can also teach self-drainage, skin care and how exercise fits with your compression routine.
Booking and practical notes
Book either session with Meeghan online through Jane, or call the clinic if you want help choosing. Wear loose clothing that is easy to remove over the legs, and avoid heavy lotions before the appointment so the skin can be moved gently. Many people with lipedema have spent years being told their legs are a weight problem, and a first appointment can feel exposing. You stay draped throughout, only the area being worked is uncovered, and you can ask Meeghan to skip an area or stop at any point. If bruising or tenderness is worse in some places than others, tell her at the start; the pressure in lymphatic drainage is very light, and it should never hurt.
When to see your doctor
Lipedema develops slowly. The NHS advises seeing a GP if you notice symptoms, or if swelling does not go down after a few days. See a doctor rather than booking a massage if:
- one leg suddenly swells, especially with pain, warmth or redness in the calf, which can signal a blood clot;
- the skin becomes red, hot and painful, or you have a fever, which can signal infection;
- swelling is spreading to your feet, which lipedema typically spares, or is getting rapidly worse.
The Cleveland Clinic also advises against lymphatic drainage with blood clots, cellulitis or other infection, fever, heart disease or kidney failure. If any of those apply, check with your doctor first, and we will plan around their advice.
Questions people ask
Do I need a lipedema diagnosis before booking?
No, but it helps. Many people arrive with suspected lipedema, and Meeghan can talk through what she sees; a diagnosis comes from a doctor, and our page on how lipedema is diagnosed explains the process. Bring any notes you already have.
Will lymphatic massage make my legs smaller?
It may ease swelling and tenderness, but it does not remove lipedema fat. A 2020 randomized trial in 30 women with stage 2 to 3 lipedema did see limb size come down with manual lymphatic drainage, and more so when vibration therapy was added, although the trial measured limb volume and could not show what changed inside the tissue.
Should I try dieting before I book?
Healthy eating helps overall health, but the Lipedema Foundation notes that lipedema tissue is typically resistant to calorie restriction and suggests using diet to lower overall inflammation instead. Being told to simply lose weight is a common frustration, and the NHS is clear that lipoedema is not caused by being overweight.
Is lipedema surgery an alternative to massage?
For some people, specialist liposuction is part of the plan, and conservative care such as drainage and compression usually continues before and after. The Lipedema Foundation reports that in the LIPLEG trial, 68 percent of people who had liposuction gained a meaningful reduction in leg pain, compared with 8 percent in the conservative therapy group.
