Can you get a facial with a cold sore?
Can you get a facial with a cold sore? No. Reschedule from the first tingle until it has fully healed, usually within 10 days, to protect you and others.

No, it is better to reschedule. A cold sore is contagious from the first tingle until it has completely healed, which usually takes up to about 10 days, and a facial means hands, products and massage moving across the area around your mouth. That can spread the virus to other parts of your face and to your esthetician, and the friction can irritate the sore. Rebook once the skin has fully healed.
Why the answer is to reschedule
A cold sore is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, and the NHS is plain about the timing: cold sores are contagious from the moment you first feel tingling until the sore has completely healed. They usually clear up within about 10 days, and they spread easily, both to other people and to other parts of your own body.
A facial puts all of that in motion. During a lymphatic facial the hands glide across the chin, jaw and around the mouth, products are spread and wiped away, and the lower face is touched again and again. The WHO notes that the virus spreads mainly through contact with sores, saliva or the skin surfaces in and around the mouth. Every pass of a hand or a cloth near the sore is a chance to move it to your cheek, your chin or your esthetician.
There is also your own comfort. A cold sore is tender, and cleansing, exfoliation and massage nearby will sting and may slow healing.
The tingle stage counts too
Many people feel a cold sore coming before anything shows: tingling, itching or burning at the edge of the lip. It is tempting to keep the appointment because nothing is visible yet. The NHS counts that stage as contagious, so treat the tingle as the start of the 10 days, not a warning you can ignore.
The tingle is also the best moment to act on the sore itself. The NHS says antiviral creams work best when started early, at the tingling stage, and that a pharmacist can suggest creams to ease discomfort and patches that cover the sore while it heals.
| What you notice | Facial? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tingling, itching or burning at the lip | Reschedule | Start treatment early; let us know |
| Blister or open sore | Reschedule | Keep hands off it, wash hands after touching |
| Crusted or scabbed | Reschedule | Still healing; wait for normal skin |
| Fully healed, skin looks normal | Book | Mention it at your consultation |
Looking after the sore while you wait
The days between cancelling and rebooking are about letting the sore heal without spreading it. The NHS self-care advice is simple:
- Wash your hands after touching the sore or applying cream, and try not to touch it at all
- Avoid kissing and oral sex until it has completely healed, and do not kiss babies, who are at risk of a serious infection called neonatal herpes
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen if it is painful
- Avoid acidic or salty food, which can make it sting
- Use a sunblock lip balm when you are outside
The WHO estimates that about 64 percent of people under 50 worldwide carry herpes simplex virus type 1, and that most were infected in childhood. Cold sores are common and nothing to be embarrassed about when you call to move an appointment. Antiviral medicine shortens and softens outbreaks but does not clear the virus, which stays dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate.
If you are booking a peel or microneedling elsewhere
Cold sores matter more as treatments go deeper. The American Academy of Dermatology asks people to tell their dermatologist whether they get cold sores before a chemical peel, and patients having medium or deep peels take an antiviral medicine for 10 to 14 days. Cleveland Clinic advises people who get cold sores often to talk with their provider before microneedling.
Our own add-on menu includes the Serene Lactic Acid Peel, a mild exfoliating acid. It is much lighter than those medical peels, but if you are prone to cold sores, mention it at your consultation and choose a facial without the peel if your lips are anywhere near flaring.
Calgary sun and cold sores
Sunshine is one of the triggers the NHS names, alongside illness and periods, and the WHO adds stress. Two things about life in and around Calgary make the sun matter more than people expect. The WHO says UV levels rise about 10 percent for every 1,000 metres of altitude, and fresh snow almost doubles a person’s UV exposure. A bright February afternoon on the hill can be harder on your lips than a July day in the city.
The NHS suggests a sunblock lip balm of SPF 15 or higher when you are outdoors. If your cold sores tend to follow ski days or a sunny week, plan your facial so it does not fall a day or two after one.
When to see a doctor
Most cold sores are a nuisance, not a medical problem. The NHS advises seeing a doctor if:
- The sore has not started to heal within 10 days
- It is very large or very painful
- You have a weakened immune system
Ask a pharmacist or doctor about antiviral treatment if outbreaks are frequent.
Rebooking your facial at Renu
If a cold sore turns up before your appointment, call the clinic at 403-270-2111 to move it, and come back once the skin has fully healed. Your facial will be with Aisha Mendes at BodyTox by Renu, inside our clinic on 19 Street NW; the lymphatic facials page lists the four options and links to Jane. When you are ready to rebook, which lymphatic facial to book can help you choose, and if your skin has other concerns, see lymphatic facials with acne.
Questions people ask
What if the cold sore has scabbed over?
A scab means it is healing, not healed. The NHS says cold sores stay contagious until they have completely healed, so wait until the scab has gone and the skin underneath looks normal before you rebook.
Could the esthetician just avoid my mouth?
Lymphatic facial work moves across the whole lower face, chin and jaw, and cleansing and masks cover the lips' edges. Hands that touch near the sore can carry the virus elsewhere, so working around it does not remove the risk. Rescheduling is simpler and kinder to your skin.
Can a facial trigger a cold sore?
We have not found evidence that a gentle lymphatic facial does. The triggers named by the NHS and the WHO are illness, sun exposure, stress and periods. Procedures that injure the skin are a different matter, which is why dermatologists give antivirals around medium and deep peels.
I get cold sores often. Can I still book facials?
Yes, on the days your lips are clear. Mention it at your consultation, especially before the lactic acid peel add-on, and ask your doctor or pharmacist about having antiviral treatment on hand so you can start it at the first tingle.
