How soon after microneedling can you have a lymphatic facial?

Lymphatic facial after microneedling: wait until redness, swelling and flaking have settled, often about a week, and follow your provider's aftercare.

By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read

Wait until your skin has fully settled: no redness, swelling, flaking or open pinpoints, which for standard microneedling is often around a week, since Cleveland Clinic says redness and swelling can last up to five days. Radiofrequency microneedling reactions usually calm faster, within hours to a few days. Exfoliation, extractions and the lactic acid peel should wait longer than the gentle drainage strokes, and your microneedling provider's own aftercare comes first.

The short answer, in days

There is no published study on how long to wait between microneedling and a lymphatic facial, so the honest rule is to let the skin tell you. A lymphatic facial is gentle, but it still means hands, products and friction on your face, and freshly needled skin is a healing wound made of thousands of tiny channels.

After What the skin is doing Facial timing
Standard microneedling Red and swollen for up to five days, then often dry and flaking (Cleveland Clinic) Once redness, swelling and flaking have gone; often about a week
Radiofrequency microneedling Redness and swelling, usually settling within hours to a few days (2026 systematic review) Once the skin looks and feels normal; ask your provider about deeper settings
Either, with blistering, bleeding or lingering swelling Not healing as expected No facial; contact your provider

Your microneedling provider knows the needle depth, the device and anything applied to your skin during the procedure. If their aftercare sheet gives a longer wait, follow it.

What microneedled skin is doing that week

Cleveland Clinic describes the usual course: skin may be red and swollen for up to five days, and some people feel burning or tightness and get dry, flaking skin that improves with moisturiser. Ice packs help, most people can wear makeup the next day, and you should stay out of the sun until healing is complete.

During those days, the outer barrier is reforming. Rubbing, warm cloths, exfoliants and acids all ask more of the skin than it can give yet. Infection is one of the listed risks of microneedling, along with bruising and scarring, which is another reason to keep unnecessary hands and products off the face until the pinpoints have closed.

For radiofrequency microneedling, a 2026 systematic review of 20 studies (558 people) found redness and swelling were the most common reactions, typically resolving within hours to a few days without treatment, and described downtime as minimal. Faster recovery on the surface does not mean the deeper heat response is finished, but it does mean the skin is often comfortable to touch sooner.

Which parts of a facial wait longest

Not every step of a lymphatic facial asks the same of your skin. Think of it in three layers:

  • Gentle drainage strokes. Slow, light, gliding movements over the neck, collarbones and face. These are the least demanding part and the first that settled skin tolerates.
  • Cleansing and massage products. Fine on healed skin; on skin that still stings, even mild products can burn.
  • Exfoliation, extractions and the lactic acid peel. These remove or break the surface on purpose. They belong on fully healed skin only, and the peel is the one to leave out of your first facial after a needling session. Even a light chemical peel takes one to seven days to heal, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and you do not want two healing processes overlapping.

So the first facial after microneedling should be a calm one. The Silk Express (30 minutes) or the Drift & Drain (60 minutes) both centre on lymphatic work; ask Aisha to keep exfoliation light or skip it, and save extractions and the peel for a later visit.

Telling your esthetician what was done

Aisha will ask, but it helps to arrive with the details:

  • The date of your last microneedling session and whether it was standard or radiofrequency
  • The areas treated, including the neck or under the eyes
  • Anything your provider applied, prescribed or told you to avoid
  • Whether you had dryness, flaking or breakouts afterwards
  • Any history of cold sores; Cleveland Clinic advises people with frequent cold sores to talk to the provider before microneedling, and the same caution applies to facial massage around the mouth

If anything is still pink, tight or peeling on the day, she will adapt or postpone rather than work through it.

Aftercare that suits both treatments

The same basics protect your microneedling result and your facial. A 2026 expert-panel review of skincare around aesthetic procedures recommends gentle cleansing twice a day, a moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen, with extra care in darker skin types to prevent dark marks after inflammation. In Calgary, that sunscreen matters in winter as much as summer, and a dry, cold day can make healing skin feel tighter, so moisturiser does real work here.

Microneedling results take time. Cleveland Clinic notes that improvement usually shows over three to six months and that most people have several sessions three to eight weeks apart. A lymphatic facial fits comfortably in the middle of that gap, on calm skin, as part of the routine rather than a rescue for a fresh treatment.

When to call your provider rather than book a facial

Cleveland Clinic lists the signs to report to your microneedling provider:

  • Bleeding that lasts more than 24 hours
  • Blistering
  • Swelling that lasts longer than a week

Add spreading redness, warmth, pus, crusting or fever, which can point to infection. None of these is a reason for a facial. Contact the clinic that did your microneedling, or your doctor, first.

Booking at Renu

Lymphatic facials are offered at BodyTox by Renu inside our clinic on 19 Street NW, with Aisha Mendes. When you book through the lymphatic facials page, add a note with your microneedling date. If you are deciding between options, which lymphatic facial to book compares all four.

Questions people ask

Can a lymphatic facial help the swelling straight after microneedling?

Not in the first days. Cleveland Clinic's advice for that stage is ice packs, moisturiser for dryness and staying out of the sun. The swelling is part of the skin's healing response and settles by itself; massaging freshly needled skin adds friction and contamination risk for no clear gain.

I had RF microneedling, not standard microneedling. Is the wait shorter?

Often, yes. A 2026 systematic review of radiofrequency microneedling found redness and swelling were the most common reactions and usually resolved within hours to a few days. Wait for the skin to look and feel normal, and check your provider's instructions, which are based on the depth and settings they used.

Should I book the facial before my next microneedling session instead?

That can work well. Sessions are usually spaced three to eight weeks apart, so a facial in the middle of that gap, on calm skin, is easy to fit. Avoid a peel or heavy exfoliation in the days right before your next needling appointment unless your provider approves.

Can I use the infrared pod after microneedling?

We suggest treating the pod like any other heat and sweat exposure and waiting until your skin has settled. Many microneedling aftercare sheets limit heat and sweating in the first days, so check yours, and follow it if it is stricter.
