Lymphatic drainage after Renuvion skin tightening in Calgary

Lymphatic drainage after Renuvion skin tightening in Calgary: whether your surgeon wants it, expected swelling, crackling and firmness, and red flags.

By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read

Lymphatic drainage after Renuvion is a surgeon-by-surgeon decision: some protocols include it, and at least one published Renuvion study used compression and taping with no lymphatic massage at all. If your surgeon approves it, gentle drainage can help with the swelling that nearly everyone has, while firmness and a crackling feeling under the skin are usually expected effects that settle. Seroma, burns and trapped helium are the device's own complications, and those go straight to your surgeon.

What Renuvion actually does under the skin

Renuvion, previously sold as J-Plasma, is an energy device. A thin probe slipped under the skin delivers radiofrequency energy carried on a stream of helium gas, which heats and coagulates the fat and connective tissue just below the skin. It is usually used right after liposuction, with the goal of helping loose skin contract onto the new contour, and sometimes on its own in areas such as the neck.

In the United States it received FDA 510(k) clearance for contraction of soft tissue after liposuction, according to a 2025 systematic review in the Annals of Plastic Surgery. That review was critical of the evidence behind skin tightening claims and noted that most of the studies it examined were funded by the manufacturer. A 2026 meta-analysis of 34 studies and 3,508 patients, by contrast, reported a pooled patient satisfaction rate of 92 percent. Reasonable surgeons disagree about how much the device adds. For your recovery, what matters is that you had both a liposuction-style injury and a heat injury under the skin, and both swell.

Does your surgeon want lymphatic drainage?

This is the first question, and the answer genuinely varies. A 2026 study comparing liposuction followed by helium plasma with liposuction alone gave both groups the same aftercare: a compression garment worn continuously for two months, lymphatic taping for the first two weeks, replaced weekly, and no recommendation for lymphatic drainage massage. Complications were similar in both groups, 2.5 percent with the device and 2.7 percent without.

In the trial that studied Renuvion on loose neck skin, patients wore a neck compression garment with a chin strap 22 hours a day for the first three days, then at night from day four to day 21, and no postoperative physiotherapy was prescribed.

Other surgeons do include lymphatic work after body contouring. So before you book, ask yours three things:

  • Is lymphatic drainage part of your protocol, and from which day?
  • Should taping stay on during sessions? (We leave it in place either way.)
  • Are there areas you want us to avoid?

Our page on whether all surgeons recommend lymphatic massage after lipo explains why opinions differ.

Expected effects versus complications

Researchers studying Renuvion separate expected effects, which almost everyone has and which fade, from complications, which need a surgeon. Knowing which is which is the most useful thing on this page.

In the neck trial, the expected effects were common:

Expected effect Share of patients
Swelling 92.3%
Temporary changes in sensation (numbness, tingling, touch sensitivity, itching) 86.2%
Bruising 55.4%
Redness 46.2%
Temporary crackling under the skin (crepitus) 40.0%
Small, moving firm lumps 12.3%

There were no serious adverse events related to the device or procedure in that trial. These effects are what lymphatic drainage, if your surgeon wants it, is aimed at: mainly the swelling.

Complications are a different list. The 2026 meta-analysis left expected effects out and still found pooled complication rates of 5 percent for helium plasma alone, 8 percent when combined with liposuction, and 15 percent when combined with excisional surgery such as a tummy tuck. Seroma, a pocket of fluid under the skin, was the most common adverse event in a 2024 comparison of 229 Renuvion patients, at 7.0 percent. Earlier series reported seromas in 6.8 percent of 192 patients treated in several areas and 13.3 percent in a small group of 15 men treated at the chest. The 2025 review also notes that adverse events reported to the FDA included 15 life-threatening events and three deaths, that full-thickness burns were frequently reported, and that helium can collect under the skin as subcutaneous emphysema.

How a session works around the treated area

If your surgeon gives the go-ahead, a session is gentle and slow, and it avoids anything that might push on a forming fluid pocket.

  1. Node regions first. For the abdomen or thighs, the armpits and groin; for the neck, the collarbones.
  2. The treated area. Light skin-stretching strokes, with the garment opened for that area only and any tape left on.
  3. Firm or crackling spots. Left alone. They are expected, and pressing does not help them.
  4. Garment back on before you sit up.

Booking at Renu

Renuvion aftercare is booked as post-op lymphatic drainage: 30 minutes is $105, 45 minutes $115 and 60 minutes $140. A neck alone usually suits 30 minutes; an abdomen with flanks, 45 or 60. Meeghan Mackenzie, our founder and Certified Lymphedema Therapist, can help you decide. When you book through Jane, mention Renuvion or J-Plasma in the notes so your therapist knows to plan around expected crackling and firmness.

When to call your surgeon first

Call your surgical team, and hold off on lymphatic work, if you notice:

  • a soft, squishy or sloshing swelling that is growing, which may be a seroma;
  • skin over the treated area that blisters, darkens, weeps or breaks down, which may be a burn;
  • crackling under the skin that spreads, or comes with trouble breathing, swallowing or chest pain, which needs 911;
  • fever, warmth and spreading redness.

A swollen, throbbing calf or thigh on one side can mean a deep vein thrombosis, the NHS warns, and needs urgent medical advice. Our page on seroma explains how fluid pockets are usually treated.

Questions people ask

Why does the treated area crackle when I press it?

Renuvion uses helium, and in the neck trial 40 percent of patients had temporary crepitus, a crackling or popping feel under the skin. It was listed as an expected effect. Crackling that spreads, or that comes with any trouble breathing, swallowing or chest pain, needs urgent medical care.

Is Renuvion approved for skin tightening?

In the United States it received FDA 510(k) clearance for contraction of soft tissue after liposuction. A 2025 systematic review that examined the published evidence was critical, noting that most studies were funded by the manufacturer. Ask your surgeon what your own treatment was meant to achieve.

Can lymphatic drainage help a seroma after Renuvion?

A formed seroma is drained by your surgeon, usually with a needle, not massaged away. Once it has been dealt with and your surgeon is happy, lymphatic work can resume around it. Until then we leave the area alone.

How soon can I book after Renuvion of the neck?

Ask your surgeon. In the published neck trial, patients wore a compression garment almost around the clock for three days and at night until day 21, and no physiotherapy was prescribed. If your surgeon agrees to lymphatic work, the neck and collarbone session fits around those garment hours.
