Gentle lymphatic strokes across a client's face and jaw during a first lymphatic facial at BodyTox by Renu in Calgary

Your first lymphatic facial in Calgary: what to expect

Your first lymphatic facial in Calgary: skin-history questions, light strokes that start at the neck, four facials of 30 to 90 minutes, a calmer face.

By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read

Your first lymphatic facial starts with questions about your skin history, such as recent Botox, filler, peels or retinoids, then combines skincare with light, slow strokes that start at the neck and collarbones and guide fluid down and out of the face. At BodyTox by Renu you choose from four facials, from the 30-minute Silk Express to the 90-minute Brazilian Lymphatic Drift, all with Aisha Mendes. Expect a calmer, less puffy face for a short while afterward rather than a lasting change.

How a lymphatic facial differs from the facials you know

A lymphatic facial is a facial built around very light drainage strokes rather than firm kneading. Healthline describes it as gentle pressure and stretching movements that encourage lymph fluid to move toward the lymph nodes in the neck, often with light tapping, stroking and rolling movements, and special care around the eyes. The aim is a calmer, less puffy face, alongside the cleansing and skincare you would expect from any facial.

What makes the hands-on part feel different:

  • Neck first. Lymphatic drainage begins at the lymph node areas, as the Cleveland Clinic describes, so your esthetician works the sides of the neck and above the collarbones before touching your face.
  • Very light pressure. Cedars-Sinai explains that lymphatic drainage uses light pressure because the lymphatic system lies directly beneath the skin.
  • Direction matters. Strokes stretch the skin in the direction lymph flows, down toward the neck.
  • Slow and repetitive. Each small movement repeats several times before moving on.

For a deeper comparison of the two styles, see lymphatic facial versus regular facial.

Choosing between the four facials

At BodyTox by Renu there are four lymphatic facials, and the simplest way to choose is by the time you have.

Facial Length Price
Silk Express Facial 30 min $80
Drift & Drain Signature Lymphatic Facial 60 min $160
Silk & Soul Signature Lymphatic Facial 75 min $180
Brazilian Lymphatic Drift 90 min $245

If you would rather answer a few questions than read menus, our skin quiz suggests a facial based on your skin, your goal and the time you have. For what sets each facial apart, step by step, read which lymphatic facial should I book. For a first visit, many people pick by occasion: the Silk Express to see whether they like the feel of drainage at all, one of the two signature facials for an unhurried first experience.

The skin-history questions, and why they matter

Before your first facial, expect questions about what your skin has been through recently. The answers decide timing, pressure and products, and occasionally whether to wait.

  • Botox or filler. Recent injectables change when facial massage is wise. See lymphatic facials after Botox or filler.
  • Peels, microneedling and retinoids. Freshly treated or sensitised skin needs time; see microneedling and retinol before a facial.
  • Rosacea or acne. Both can usually be worked around with care; read rosacea and acne.
  • Pregnancy. Mention it; lymphatic facials while pregnant explains what changes.
  • Your general health. Healthline advises checking with a provider first if you have a high risk of blood clots, congestive heart failure, an active lymphatic infection or swelling with no known cause.

On the table: what you will feel

The drainage part feels like a soft, slow stretch of the skin, lighter than most people expect. Many first-timers wonder whether anything is happening; that lightness is deliberate. Healthline notes the use of the ring finger and gentle rolling movements around the eyes, the most delicate area of the face.

Between the drainage sequences come the skincare steps. At BodyTox by Renu, the products on the table are from Om Organics, made in Invermere, BC; our page on the skincare products used in Renu facials has more. If you have any product sensitivities, mention them before you start.

Your esthetician will be Aisha Mendes, a licensed esthetician with a CIDESCO Diploma in Esthetics, a Certified Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Practitioner and the lymphatic facialist at BodyTox by Renu.

Preparing on the day

A few small things make the first visit smoother:

  • Makeup. Arriving with a bare face saves time, but coming straight from work in makeup is fine; just say so.
  • Hair. Bring a clip or tie if your hair is long, since your neck and collarbones are worked too.
  • Clothing. Wear a top that is easy to slip off or lower at the neckline.
  • Timing. For a wedding or a photo day, the date of the facial matters; see when to book a lymphatic facial before a wedding.

Calgary’s dry winter air and indoor heating can leave skin tight and flaky. Tell your esthetician how your skin has felt lately so the products can be chosen for it.

How you will look afterward, honestly

Most people leave with a face that looks a little less puffy and feels calm, and the effect is temporary. Healthline is candid that the cosmetic benefits are largely unproven and that most of the evidence is anecdotal, quoting a dermatologist who notes that a typical person does not have lymphatic problems in the face. The Cleveland Clinic notes that some people feel tired, or have a headache or nausea, after lymphatic drainage.

When facial swelling needs a doctor instead

A lymphatic facial is for everyday puffiness, not for swelling that has a medical cause. NCCIH advises against using massage to postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem. Healthline advises checking with a provider first when swelling has no known cause or there is an active infection, so see your doctor before booking if facial swelling appeared suddenly, keeps returning without explanation, or comes with redness, heat, pain or fever. The same applies if you have congestive heart failure or a high risk of blood clots.

Questions people ask

Is a lymphatic facial relaxing or more of a treatment?

Both. The strokes are slow and light enough that many people drift off, and the skincare steps are the same kind of care you would expect from a facial. If relaxation is your main goal, the longer facials leave more time for it.

Will my face look red afterward?

Skin responds differently from person to person, and sensitive or reactive skin can stay pink for a while after any facial. If you have a meeting or an event straight after, mention it when you arrive so your esthetician can plan the products and steps with that in mind.

Can I book a lymphatic facial at lunchtime?

The 30-minute Silk Express is the one that fits a lunch hour. The longer facials are easier to enjoy without watching the clock, and we are open weekday evenings until 8:30 pm and from 10 am to 5 pm on weekends.

Do men book lymphatic facials?

Yes. A lymphatic facial works the same way on any face, and puffiness after a poor night's sleep is not limited to anyone. Choose by the time you have, exactly as anyone else would.
