Fertility lymphatic massage in Calgary: gentle care for the bloated, heavy feeling of fertility treatment. 75-min first visit $140, follow-ups $130.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 6 min read
Fertility lymphatic massage at Renu is gentle, rhythmic lymphatic therapy for people trying to conceive or going through IUI or IVF who feel heavy, puffy or bloated and need a place to rest. It is booked as Fertility support lymphatic therapy: a 75-minute first visit ($140) and 60-minute follow-ups ($130), timed around your cycle and treatment calendar. It is comfort care that supports your medical treatment; no trial has shown that lymphatic massage improves the chance of pregnancy.
Fertility lymphatic massage is gentle, hands-on lymphatic therapy for the physical weight of trying to conceive: the puffy, heavy, bloated feeling many people carry through a stimulation cycle, and the tiredness of a body that has become something to be monitored. At Renu it is booked as Fertility support lymphatic therapy, and it is designed to sit beside your medical care, never in place of it. This page explains what a session involves, how we time it, what it can and cannot do, and when a symptom belongs with your fertility clinic instead.
What fertility lymphatic therapy is for
The honest purpose is comfort and rest. Lymphatic therapy uses light, slow, rhythmic strokes to encourage fluid to move from swollen tissue toward the lymph nodes, and Cleveland Clinic lists reduced fluid retention and stress management among the reasons people use it. During fertility treatment, that can mean easing the heavy, bloated feeling many clients describe, while giving your body permission to rest for an hour.
People usually come to us at one of these points:
- Preparing to try, naturally or before IUI or IVF, wanting regular care that feels kind rather than clinical.
- During stimulation, when the abdomen feels full and tight and sleep is unsettled.
- Between cycles, when the waiting and the appointments have worn the nervous system thin.
- Alongside acupuncture, as part of a combined plan with Dr. Will Tanner.
What it is not: a fertility treatment. No clinical trial has tested whether lymphatic massage changes the chance of conceiving, and we will not suggest otherwise. The UK fertility regulator, the HFEA, puts it plainly: complementary therapies may be suggested to help with relaxation or general wellbeing, and they are not regulated by the HFEA. That is the frame we work in too.
How a session at Renu works
Your first visit is the initial consultation and treatment, 75 minutes, $140. Follow-up sessions are 60 minutes, $130. You can book online through Jane, and Meeghan Mackenzie, our founder and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, has her own Jane link for this treatment.
The first visit starts with a conversation, not the table. We will ask:
- Where you are right now: trying naturally, preparing for a cycle, mid-stimulation, after retrieval, after transfer or insemination, or between rounds.
- What medications you are taking and the dates of your next procedures.
- How your body feels: bloating, swelling in the legs or hands, sleep, digestion, stress.
- Any history of blood clots, heart or kidney problems, or recent infection.
Lymphatic work generally begins at the neck and collarbones, where the main lymph pathways return fluid to the bloodstream, and then moves to the areas that feel full. The pressure is light, closer to resting your hand on the skin than to a massage stroke, and the pace is slow enough that you can simply lie back.
Follow-ups are shorter and build on the plan from the first visit. How often you come is your choice; we will suggest a rhythm that fits your treatment calendar rather than a fixed package.
Timing your care around a cycle
We time lymphatic care around your cycle and treatment calendar, and there are certain situations where we pause specific parts of the work. We always talk this through with you first, and anything your fertility clinic has told you takes priority over our plan.
A few practical habits help:
- Bring your calendar. Stimulation start, trigger, retrieval and transfer dates let us place sessions sensibly.
- Tell us when anything changes. A new medication, a cancelled cycle or a positive test all change what we do on the table.
- Skip the heat. Cleveland Clinic advises people who are pregnant or trying to conceive to avoid infrared saunas, so the cocoon pod is not part of fertility care at Renu.
If injections are part of your protocol, you may have read that massage helps with them. One study of 149 women starting IVF found that those who did their own abdominal massage before the gonadotropin injection reported slightly lower injection-site pain, while the comparison group’s pain rose. It was a small, non-randomized study of self-massage, so treat it as a gentle idea to raise with your nurse, not a reason to book.
Booking lymphatic therapy, acupuncture, or both
You can book either, or both. Fertility support acupuncture with Will is a 90-minute first visit ($150) and 60-minute follow-ups ($120), and it focuses on nervous system regulation, relaxation and support through your cycle. Lymphatic therapy works with fluid and rest. Some clients see one practitioner; others benefit from both, and we will recommend what makes sense at your first visit. Our page on fertility acupuncture in Calgary covers Will’s side, and acupuncture and lymphatic drainage in Calgary explains how the two are planned together.
| Fertility support at Renu | First visit | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Lymphatic therapy | 75 min, $140 | 60 min, $130 |
| Acupuncture with Will | 90 min, $150 | 60 min, $120 |
If you are mid-cycle and only have room for one appointment, tell us whether physical fullness or stress and sleep is weighing on you most, and we will point you toward the one that fits.
When to call your fertility clinic first
Some symptoms during fertility treatment are not for massage. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a reaction to the fertility drugs used to increase egg production, and the HFEA says patients who develop strong symptoms generally do so in the week after egg collection. Contact your clinic straight away, and do not come in for lymphatic work, if you have:
- a swollen stomach or stomach pain that is getting worse;
- nausea or vomiting;
- shortness of breath or feeling faint;
- passing much less urine than usual.
The HFEA’s advice is to contact your clinic immediately if you notice these, and never to feel you are wasting their time. We agree.
Lymphatic massage is also not appropriate with a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis, a fever or active infection, cellulitis, heart disease or kidney failure, according to Cleveland Clinic. A calf that is suddenly painful, warm or swollen needs a doctor the same day. Side effects of lymphatic massage are uncommon, but some people feel tired, headachy or slightly nauseous afterwards; drinking water and resting usually helps.
If you are unsure whether today is a good day for a session, call us. We would much rather move an appointment than work on a body that needs medical attention. And if you are not ready to book at all, you are welcome to simply ask questions; we can help you map out what support could look like for where you are.
Questions people ask
Is lymphatic massage safe after an embryo transfer or insemination?
It can be, with changes. Tell us the date of your procedure when you book and again on the table; we adapt the session to that stage, and there are situations where we pause specific work. Any restriction from your fertility clinic comes first.
Can lymphatic massage ease the bloating from stimulation medication?
It may ease the heavy, puffy feeling that comes from fluid in the tissues, and many people simply value the rest. It does not change how your ovaries respond to medication, and a stomach that keeps swelling or hurts after egg collection is a reason to call your clinic, not to book a massage.
Can I use the infrared pod while I am trying to conceive?
We would not suggest it. Cleveland Clinic advises people who are pregnant or trying to conceive to avoid infrared saunas, so we leave the cocoon pod out of fertility care.
Do I need a referral to book?
No referral is needed. You can book Fertility support lymphatic therapy online through Jane, including with Meeghan by name, or call the clinic if you would like help choosing a time around your treatment dates.
