By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
Fertility acupuncture at Renu is fertility support acupuncture with Dr. Will Tanner, a Registered Massage Therapist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine: a 90-minute initial consultation and treatment ($150), then 60-minute follow-ups ($120). Sessions focus on nervous system regulation, relaxation and support through your cycle, timed around your cycle and treatment calendar and alongside your fertility clinic. The best evidence does not show acupuncture raises pregnancy or live birth rates in IVF, so we offer it as support for how you feel, not as a fertility treatment.
What fertility acupuncture at Renu is
Fertility acupuncture at Renu is acupuncture aimed at how you feel while you try to conceive. A fertility journey can turn your body into something to be monitored rather than cared for: appointments, injections, waiting and hoping. Sessions with Dr. Will Tanner focus on nervous system regulation, relaxation and support for balance through your cycle, and on giving you an hour in which nothing is being measured.
Ultra-fine sterile needles are placed at chosen points, and most people lie quietly with them in place for part of the session. Many describe it as calming and grounding. It suits people trying to conceive naturally, those preparing for IUI or IVF, and those in the middle of a cycle. Our role is to support your medical care, never to replace it.
The two sessions and what they cost
Fertility support acupuncture is booked as its own treatment with Will, separate from general acupuncture.
| Session | Length | Price | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial consultation and treatment | 90 min | $150 | Your history, cycle, treatment plan and goals, then a first treatment |
| Follow-up | 60 min | $120 | Treatment timed to where you are in your cycle or clinic calendar |
The longer first visit leaves time for your full history before the first treatment; our page on your first acupuncture appointment describes what an intake covers. For general acupuncture pricing, see how much acupuncture costs in Calgary.
Timed around your cycle and your clinic
We time your care around your cycle and your treatment calendar. If you are trying naturally, Will plans sessions across the month with you. If you are in IUI or IVF, bring your clinic’s calendar, because stimulation, retrieval and transfer dates shape when a session makes sense and when you would rather rest.
We are always happy to work alongside your fertility clinic or physician, and we encourage you to tell them you are having acupuncture. Renu is open seven days, including weekday evenings until 8:30 pm and weekends from 10 am to 5 pm, which makes it easier to fit a session around clinic appointments and work.
If you would like hands-on care for the bloating and heaviness that often come with stimulation, fertility support lymphatic massage can be booked on its own or alongside acupuncture. Combining acupuncture with massage during IVF is covered on acupuncture and massage during IVF.
What the evidence shows, honestly
The best evidence does not show that acupuncture improves the chance of a baby with assisted conception. We think you deserve to know that before you book.
- Cochrane review. Twenty randomized trials, six on acupuncture at egg collection (912 women) and fourteen during assisted conception (3,632 women), found no evidence that acupuncture improves live birth or pregnancy rates. It also found no effect on miscarriage rates and no significant side effects. The evidence was rated low quality and is current to July 2013.
- NCCIH. A 2021 analysis of six studies with 2,507 participants found no difference in pregnancy or live birth outcomes between acupuncture and sham acupuncture in IVF.
- HFEA. The UK fertility regulator says complementary therapies may be suggested during fertility treatment to help with relaxation or general wellbeing. It does not regulate them and does not rate them.
That is the frame we work within. It also means you never need to feel you have failed at acupuncture if a cycle does not work; nothing in the research suggests the needles decide the outcome. People come to fertility acupuncture with us because the process is stressful and they want support for their nervous system, sleep and sense of control, not because we promise a pregnancy.
Who you will see
Dr. Will Tanner is a Registered Massage Therapist and acupuncturist who trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine at CITCM. His training also includes exercise science, Tuina massage and Hatha yoga, and he offers prenatal massage at Renu, which means care can continue with the same person if you conceive. Book fertility support acupuncture with Will online through Jane, or contact us if you would like to talk through where you are first. You will find us in West Hillhurst on 19 Street NW, where street parking is free.
Safety, and when to check with your clinic first
Acupuncture has a good safety record when done properly. NCCIH notes that relatively few complications have been reported, and that problems have come from non-sterile needles and improper technique; needles are regulated as single-use, sterile devices, as explained on are acupuncture needles single-use. If you notice a small bruise or feel sleepy afterward, see whether bruising after acupuncture is normal and why you may feel tired after acupuncture.
Check with your fertility clinic or doctor before booking if your clinic has given you instructions about other treatments during a cycle, or if you take blood thinners (see massage, cupping or acupuncture on blood thinners). If you develop any symptom your fertility clinic has asked you to report during a cycle, contact the clinic first and book acupuncture once they are happy for you to go ahead.
One more thing to skip while you are trying to conceive: the infrared cocoon pod. The Cleveland Clinic warns that sauna use, especially early in pregnancy, can be harmful to a developing baby, and that heat is not good for sperm health.
Questions people ask
When in my cycle should I book fertility acupuncture?
There is no single right day, which is why Will plans the timing with you. Bring your cycle dates, or your clinic's calendar if you are in IUI or IVF, and he will space sessions around them and around your clinic appointments.
Should I tell my fertility clinic I am having acupuncture?
Yes. We encourage every client to let their fertility clinic know, and we are happy to work alongside your clinic or physician. Your medical team's plan always comes first.
Can my partner come for acupuncture too?
Partners can book their own acupuncture sessions with Will. Research on acupuncture for sperm quality is limited, and NCCIH notes that a 2020 review of 12 studies found the evidence insufficient for firm conclusions, so we present it as support rather than a fix.
Can I add lymphatic therapy to fertility acupuncture?
Yes. Renu also offers fertility support lymphatic therapy, a 75-minute first session ($140) and 60-minute follow-ups ($130), for fluid retention and the heavy, bloated feeling many people have during treatment. You can book either one or both.
