By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read

At Renu, your first acupuncture visit with Dr. Will Tanner is a 90-minute consultation and treatment for $150. After that, a 60-minute return visit is $120, a 45-minute follow-up is $85, and a 90-minute acupuncture and massage combination is $167. Under CRA rules, acupuncture for a health purpose by a practitioner licensed in Alberta is exempt from GST.

Acupuncture at Renu costs $150 for your first 90-minute visit and $85 to $120 for each visit after that, depending on length. All four options are with Dr. Will Tanner, a Registered Massage Therapist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Below we set out what each appointment includes, why the first one is priced higher, how GST applies in Alberta, and how to think about the number of visits before you commit to a plan.

Acupuncture prices at Renu

There are four acupuncture appointments to choose from, and the right one depends on whether you are new and whether you also want hands-on massage.

Appointment Length Price
Initial consultation and treatment 90 min $150
Return visit 60 min $120
Follow-up 45 min $85
Acupuncture and massage combination 90 min $167

If you are coming for fertility support, that program has its own price group on our acupuncture page, so the figures above are for general acupuncture.

Why the first visit costs more

The first appointment is 90 minutes because Will needs time to understand you before placing a single needle. Expect questions about your main concern, your health history, sleep, digestion and stress, and an assessment that in Traditional Chinese Medicine often includes looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse. Our page on why the acupuncturist checks your pulse and tongue explains what he is looking for.

That groundwork is a one-time cost. Once there is a plan, return visits can focus on treatment, so they are shorter and less expensive per appointment.

Choosing between 45 and 60 minutes after that

After your first visit, the choice is mostly about how much needs attention.

  • Follow-up, 45 minutes, $85. Suited to one main concern that is already responding, or to maintenance once you are feeling better.
  • Return visit, 60 minutes, $120. Leaves room for more than one area, or for a concern that is still settling.
  • Acupuncture and massage combination, 90 minutes, $167. For people who want needling and hands-on muscle work in the same appointment, which is a practical fit for neck, shoulder and back tension. Will is a Registered Massage Therapist as well as an acupuncturist, so one practitioner does both.

If you are unsure, book the 60-minute return visit for your second appointment and ask Will whether a shorter follow-up would serve you just as well from then on.

How many visits to budget for

No one can promise a fixed number of sessions, but published research gives a sense of scale. The clearest public benchmark is from the United States, where, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), Medicare covers up to 12 acupuncture visits for chronic low back pain, with 8 more if the person is improving. That gives a rough idea of what a course for a long-standing problem can look like.

As an illustration only, here is what different numbers of visits would cost at our prices, assuming one initial visit and the rest as 45-minute follow-ups or 60-minute return visits:

Visits in total With 45-min follow-ups With 60-min return visits
4 $405 $510
6 $575 $750
12 $1,085 $1,470

Most people have a sense within a handful of visits of whether acupuncture is helping, and our answer on how many acupuncture sessions before you notice a difference covers that question in more depth. If something is not changing, it is fair to talk about stopping.

What the evidence says you are paying for

Acupuncture has better research behind it for some problems than others, and it helps to know which before you budget. NCCIH summarizes the evidence this way:

  • Back and neck pain: more effective than no treatment, with relief comparable to anti-inflammatory medicines in the trials reviewed. The American College of Physicians lists it as a first-line non-drug option for chronic low back pain.
  • Migraine prevention: a 2020 review found it slightly more effective than drugs, with people less likely to stop because of side effects.
  • Tension-type headaches: moderate to low quality evidence that it may reduce how often they happen.
  • Knee osteoarthritis: more effective than no treatment, comparable to anti-inflammatory medicines.

For many other uses, the evidence is thinner. We would rather you spend your budget where the research is reasonable and where you can track change.

GST, benefits and checking credentials in Alberta

Acupuncture is treated differently from massage for tax purposes. The Canada Revenue Agency’s guidance on acupuncture says the service is exempt from GST/HST when four conditions are met: it is acupuncture, it is provided by a practitioner licensed or certified in a province that regulates the profession, it is for a health purpose, and it is not cosmetic. Alberta is one of the provinces CRA lists as regulating acupuncture, and the exemption has applied since February 2014.

Acupuncture in Alberta is regulated by the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta, which sets practice standards, handles registration and complaints, and keeps a public directory you can use to verify a practitioner. Whether an extended health plan pays, and how much, is set by each plan, including yearly maximums and per-visit limits, so read your booklet or see our page on acupuncture coverage in Alberta.

Safety and when to talk to your doctor first

The cost of a visit should include safe practice, and in acupuncture that starts with the needles. NCCIH notes that needles are regulated as medical devices and must be sterile and labelled for single use; complications are relatively rare but can include infection or injury if acupuncture is delivered improperly.

Tell Will, and check with your doctor first, if you are pregnant, take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, or have had lymph nodes removed. We have separate answers on acupuncture during pregnancy and treatment on blood thinners. New, severe or unexplained pain should be looked at by a doctor before you start any course of treatment.

Questions people ask

Why is the first acupuncture appointment more expensive?

The first visit runs 90 minutes because it includes a full intake and assessment as well as treatment. Return visits skip most of that groundwork, which is why they are shorter and cost less.

Do I pay GST on acupuncture in Alberta?

CRA's GST/HST guidance says acupuncture is exempt when it is provided by a practitioner licensed in a province that regulates the profession, Alberta among them, for a health purpose rather than a cosmetic one. A treatment aimed purely at appearance would not meet that test.

Can I claim acupuncture on my extended health plan?

That depends on your plan: annual maximums, per-visit limits and the practitioner credentials a plan accepts all vary. Check your plan booklet before your first visit; our page on acupuncture coverage in Alberta walks through what to ask.

How do I check that an acupuncturist is registered in Alberta?

The College of Acupuncturists of Alberta regulates the profession here and offers a public directory where you can verify a registered acupuncturist by name. It is a quick check worth doing with any clinic.
