Massage for university students in Calgary
Massage for university students in Calgary: study-posture neck and back pain, exam stress, what the UCalgary SU plan pays, and booking around classes.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
Massage can ease the neck, shoulder and back tension that long study sessions build up, and one trial found a 30-minute massage before a final exam lowered students' anxiety. If you are a full-time UCalgary undergraduate, the SU Health and Dental Plan pays 80% of a registered massage therapist's visit up to $20, to $300 a benefit year, with a physician's prescription. A 30 or 45 minute session is often enough for one tight area.
What massage helps with during a degree
For most students, massage is about two things: the neck, shoulders and back that stiffen through long days in lecture seats, library chairs and laptops on kitchen tables, and the stress that builds toward midterms and finals. A session works on the first directly and gives you a quiet break from the second.
Long hours of sitting are part of the picture. A meta-analysis of sedentary behaviour found that prolonged sitting time was a significant risk factor for low back pain in adults (odds ratio 1.42), and among young people, computer, phone and console time was linked with low back pain too. Massage does not cancel out sitting, but it is a reasonable way to ease what sitting leaves behind. A Cochrane review of massage for low back pain found it helped in the short term, with minor side effects, so think of it as something you return to in heavy weeks rather than a one-time fix.
Exam stress: what one trial found
There is a small study done exactly in this setting. Undergraduate business students aged 18 to 23 received a 30-minute massage from a licensed massage therapist within 2 hours before a final exam. Their overall anxiety and their test anxiety both dropped significantly from before to after the massage.
Two honest caveats. The comparison group, who spent 30 minutes adult colouring instead, also had a calm half hour, and the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. The study was also not a fully randomized trial. So the fairest reading is that a short, calm break before an exam helps, and massage is one good way to take it.
In practice, booking a massage right before an exam can be hard to arrange. Many students use a 30 or 45 minute session earlier in exam week, when the backlog of studying has already built up in the shoulders.
What your UCalgary student plan pays
If you are a full-time UCalgary undergraduate taking three or more courses per session, you are automatically enrolled in the Students’ Union Health and Dental Plan when you register. The terms for massage are:
| Plan detail | What the SU plan says |
|---|---|
| Reimbursement | 80% to a maximum of $20 per visit for registered massage therapists |
| Annual maximum | $300 per benefit year, per service |
| Paperwork | A physician’s prescription or referral is required |
| Coverage period | 12 months from your annual fee, even if you stop being a student |
| Opting out | Once a year on the anniversary of enrolment, usually September, if you have comparable coverage |
So on a 30-minute massage at $80, the plan would pay $20, the per-visit cap. The plan pays only part of each visit, so check your remaining balance and get the prescription before you book. Our page on the University of Calgary student health plan and massage goes deeper on claims; if you also have a parent’s plan, the balance can often be submitted there too.
On-campus massage or Renu?
UCalgary Student Wellness Services offers massage on campus with student and senior rates: a half session at $58, a full session at $88 and an extended session at $130, and it can direct bill some insurance plans. If you are on campus all day and price matters most, that is a good option and we would rather you know about it.
Students come to Renu when they want evening or weekend times, live closer to the inner northwest, or want a specific service we offer such as TMJ massage or cupping. We are open seven days a week, until 8:30 pm on weekdays and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekends. The clinic is on 19 Street NW in West Hillhurst; the nearest CTrain stations are Lions Park and Sunnyside on the Red Line, the same line that serves University station.
One wording note: our student massage price is for a session with a massage therapy student practitioner, not a discount for university students. Student sessions are not RMT services, so they may not suit a plan claim. See student massage vs RMT massage for the difference.
Choosing a length
| Length | Price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 30 min | $80 | Neck and shoulders after a long study block |
| 45 min | $100 | Neck, shoulders and upper back |
| 60 min | $120 | Back and neck together, or the end of exam season |
Book online through Jane and add a note about where it hurts. If you are not sure a short session is enough, is a 30-minute massage worth it helps you decide.
Between sessions, and when to see a doctor
Most study pain improves with a few changes: a screen at eye level, regular breaks to stand and move, and a short stretch routine. Our desk set-up for neck and shoulder pain and desk stretches for neck and shoulders work just as well in a dorm room.
See a doctor, or Student Wellness Services, before massage if you have:
- pins and needles, numbness or a weak grip that comes and goes with your neck pain
- a headache that is sudden and severe or unlike any you have had
- back or neck pain after a fall or sports injury
- anxiety, low mood or poor sleep that is affecting your studies
Exam stress that feels unmanageable deserves real support, not just a massage. When you are ready to book, see every option on our massage therapy page.
Questions people ask
Does the UCalgary student plan cover massage without a doctor's note?
No. The SU Health and Dental Plan marks registered massage therapy as a service that needs a physician's prescription or referral. Get it before your visit so your claim is not refused.
Is Renu's student massage rate a discount for university students?
No. Our student massage price is for a session with a massage therapy student practitioner, not a discount for students. Student sessions are not RMT services, so check your plan before trying to claim one.
When is the best time to book a massage around exams?
The study that measured exam anxiety gave the massage within two hours before a final. Most students find a session in exam week, rather than right before walking in, easier to arrange; avoid deep pressure the day before if you tend to feel sore.
Can I opt out of the UCalgary plan if my parents' plan covers me?
If you have comparable coverage, you can apply to opt out, but only once a year on the anniversary of your enrolment, usually in September. You can also coordinate claims between two plans.
