Massage and lymphatic care before your wedding in Calgary
Massage and lymphatic care before your wedding in Calgary: a week-by-week plan for the couple and family, what to try early and what to keep gentle.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
Plan wedding treatments in three stages: try anything new two months or more out, keep the final week to gentle lymphatic and relaxation work you have already had, and leave the day before for rest or a short familiar facial. Peels, new skincare, firm deep tissue work and cupping all belong early, because they can leave redness, flaking, tenderness or marks. The same plan works for the whole wedding party, from the couple's facials to a relaxation massage for parents.
Wedding planning comes with a long list of appointments, and treatments for the face and body tend to get squeezed into the last few days. That is exactly when they are most likely to go wrong. A little planning lets the couple, the wedding party and the parents all arrive at the day relaxed, with skin that looks like itself on a good day. Here is how we suggest spacing things out.
The one rule: nothing new close to the date
Anything your skin or body has not tried before belongs at least two months out. The American Academy of Dermatology is clear about why:
- Peels need recovery time. After a light chemical peel, healing takes one to seven days, with redness and then possible scaling for another three to seven. Medium peels take 7 to 14 days, with swelling that worsens for 48 hours. Some people also follow a pre-peel skin care plan for two to four weeks.
- New products need weeks. Trying new acne treatments too often can irritate the skin and cause breakouts, and results can take several weeks to a few months to show.
Massage follows the same logic. NCCIH describes the risk of harm from massage as low, but the rare serious problems it notes mostly involved vigorous deep tissue work. A first firm session leaves many people tender for a day or two, which is not what you want in a fitted outfit.
A week-by-week plan
Work backwards from the date. This is the schedule we would sketch for most couples.
| When | What to book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks or more out | Trial facial, any peel add-on, new skincare, first Brazilian lymphatic session, deep tissue or cupping | Time to see how your skin and body respond, and to recover if they react |
| 4 to 6 weeks out | A second facial if the first suited you | Confirms your choice; the details are in our facial timing guide |
| 2 weeks out | Last firm massage or cupping, if you want them | Leaves time for tenderness and marks to settle |
| Final week | Gentle lymphatic facial, Brazilian lymphatic drainage you have had before, relaxation massage | Calm, familiar, low-risk |
| Day before | Rest, or a short facial you already know | Nothing that could leave redness |
| Wedding day | No new treatments | Your skin and body have done the work |
For body treatments, the exact timing of Brazilian lymphatic drainage before an event is covered in our Brazilian lymphatic drainage event guide. If cupping is on your list and your back will be on show, check how long cupping marks last before you book.
What each person in the party might book
A wedding is a good excuse to look after the people around you too. Here is how the Renu menu tends to map onto a wedding party.
- The couple. A lymphatic facial in the final week; the Drift & Drain Signature Lymphatic Facial (60 minutes, $160) or the Silk & Soul Signature Lymphatic Facial (75 minutes, $180), which adds lower-body massage. If you want body drainage too, the Full BodyTox (90 minutes, $315) can sit earlier in the final week.
- Bridesmaids, groomsmen and partners. The Silk Express Facial (30 minutes, $80) fits a busy week and suits people who rarely have facials.
- Parents and grandparents. A 60-minute relaxation massage ($120) a few days before eases the stress of hosting. Mention any health conditions when booking, as for any massage.
- Anyone who is pregnant. Prenatal massage is its own service with its own precautions; book that rather than a standard session.
Each guest books their own appointment through Jane. If you want several people seen on the same day, call us at 403-270-2111 and we will see what can be lined up.
Peels, injectables and skincare in the final month
Keep the final month boring for your skin. That means:
- No first-time peels. If you are curious about the lactic acid peel add-on, read what it does and try it at your trial facial, not in wedding week.
- No new actives. A new retinoid or acid started late can leave you irritated on the day; see whether to stop retinol before a facial.
- Injectables on your injector’s schedule. Ask them, not us, how far before the day to book, and tell us the date when you book a facial.
- Sun protection after any peel. The American Academy of Dermatology advises keeping healing skin out of the sun after a peel.
If your skin is prone to breakouts, our page on whether a facial can cause a breakout is worth reading before your trial.
When to talk to a doctor first
A few situations call for medical advice before any pre-wedding treatment: an active skin infection or a cold sore on the face, a rash you cannot explain, a recent surgery, or pregnancy complications. Treat new swelling in one leg, especially with pain or warmth, as a reason to see a doctor, not to book drainage. Your wedding date can wait for a simple check.
Booking wedding treatments at Renu
Lymphatic facials and Brazilian lymphatic drainage are offered at BodyTox by Renu, inside the same West Hillhurst clinic as our massage therapy. We are open seven days, until 8:30 pm on weekdays and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekends, so most wedding parties can find a slot around work. Book early, tell us the wedding date when you book, and see the full lymphatic facials menu for what each facial includes.
Questions people ask
Can the whole bridal party have facials the same day?
Yes, as long as each person has tried the facial before or chooses a gentle one. Each guest books their own appointment through Jane, or you can call us to ask about lining several up on one day. Book early, especially for a weekend wedding.
Is it safe to have a massage the day before my wedding?
A relaxation massage at a pressure you already know is fine for most people. Avoid a first deep tissue session or cupping that close, since they can leave you tender or marked. If you have not had a massage in years, book one earlier in the month first.
What should the groom or partner book?
The same rules apply to everyone. A Silk Express facial or a Drift & Drain facial in the final week, plus a relaxation massage, is a common choice for partners who rarely have treatments. Anyone trying something for the first time should do it weeks ahead.
Should I start a new skincare product for the wedding?
Only if you start it well ahead. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that new acne treatments can take several weeks to a few months to work, and trying new products too often can irritate skin and cause breakouts. The final month is the time to stick with what you know.
