Yes. Renu's male Registered Massage Therapist is Dr. Will Tanner, who offers massage therapy, prenatal massage, fire cupping and acupuncture, and you can book him by name through Jane (massage is $120 for 60 minutes). You can equally ask for a female therapist; either request is welcome and you do not need to explain it. Whoever treats you, the same professional standards apply: draping throughout, consent before any sensitive area, and your right to change or stop the treatment at any time.

If you are looking for a male massage therapist in Calgary, Renu’s is Dr. Will Tanner, a Registered Massage Therapist and acupuncturist, and you can book him directly by name. If you would rather see a female therapist, that is just as easy to arrange. Either way, the standards in the room do not change with the therapist: you are draped, you are asked before any sensitive area is treated, and you can change or stop the session at any time. This page explains who Will is, how to choose a therapist by gender, and what professional care looks like.

Who our male RMT is

Dr. Will Tanner is a Registered Massage Therapist and acupuncturist. His listed credentials are RMT, acupuncture, fire cupping and prenatal massage. He trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine at CITCM, and his wider training includes exercise science, Hatha yoga, Breathwave, Usui Reiki, Tuina massage, massage therapy and acupuncture.

What that means in a session:

  • Massage therapy for tension and pain, which he can blend with Tuina, a Chinese style of massage, if you are interested.
  • Fire cupping, a traditional technique he is one of the few Calgary RMTs to offer.
  • Prenatal massage, for which he has a direct booking link.
  • Acupuncture, including fertility support acupuncture. Returning acupuncture clients can also book a 90-minute acupuncture and massage combination ($167).

Our team page bio refers to Will as “he”, and he is the only practitioner on our current team whose bio does; the bios of our other practitioners use “she”. So if you want a male therapist, Will is who to book, and if you want a female therapist, any other member of our team is an option.

How to choose a male or female therapist

You can choose your therapist when you book, online or by phone, and you never have to give a reason.

  1. Online through Jane: pick the treatment, then choose the practitioner by name. Will’s massage therapy, prenatal massage and acupuncture each have their own booking links on our team page.
  2. By phone: call 403-270-2111 and tell us you would prefer a male or a female therapist. We will offer times with the right person.
  3. On the day: if anything changes, say so. You can ask to reschedule with someone else.

If your preferred therapist is fully booked, you can wait for their next opening or ask who else has time.

Why people have a preference, and why it is welcome

People ask for a particular gender of therapist for many reasons, and all of them are valid:

  • Comfort: some people relax more easily with a man, some with a woman.
  • Past experiences: for someone with a history of trauma, the choice can decide whether a massage feels safe at all.
  • Cultural or religious reasons: some faiths or families expect care from someone of the same gender.
  • Familiarity: some people simply want the therapist a friend recommended.

One common belief is that male therapists press harder. Pressure is not set by gender; it is set by what you ask for and what your body needs, and every one of our therapists adjusts it as they work. Cleveland Clinic’s advice applies whoever is treating you: if a technique feels like pain rather than something therapeutic, speak up.

What every session at Renu includes, whoever treats you

Professional standards apply equally to every therapist. Renu is a clinical practice offering registered massage therapy, and our sessions follow the boundaries you would expect in any health setting.

  • Draping: for massage, you undress to your comfort level and are draped with sheets throughout. You can keep any clothing on that you like; for table Thai massage you stay fully clothed.
  • Consent for sensitive areas: before any sensitive area is treated, your therapist explains why and how, and goes ahead only if you agree.
  • Ongoing check-ins: your therapist will ask about pressure and comfort, and you can say no to any area at any time.
  • Your right to stop: you can ask to pause, change the treatment or end the session. That is never a problem. See whether you can ask your massage therapist to stop or change the treatment.

Alberta does not yet regulate massage therapy, so it has no college standard to point to here. Ontario does, and the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario’s standard on boundaries and draping sets out the same principles: always drape unless the client arrives in suitable clothing and prefers to remain clothed, never expose sensitive areas without the client’s informed consent, and continuously monitor consent and comfort throughout treatment. We think those are the right expectations anywhere. Our glossary entry on draping explains how it works on the table.

Credentials and the RMT title in Alberta

Because massage therapy is not yet regulated in Alberta, it is worth knowing what “RMT” means here. The Massage Therapist Association of Alberta explains that before regulation is proclaimed, the RMT title is not protected in Alberta; once it is, the title will only be available to those registered with the new College under the Health Professions Act. As of March 2025, the process was at the stage of Minister Review.

Each of our RMTs holds that title through a professional association. NCCIH’s advice is good practice wherever you book: ask about a therapist’s training, experience and credentials, and if you are unsure whether massage suits your health, talk to your health care provider first.

Questions people ask

Do male massage therapists use more pressure?

Yes. Prenatal massage is one of Will's listed credentials, and he has a direct Jane booking link for it. Prenatal massage is $120 for 60 minutes or $157 for 90 minutes.

What if my preferred therapist is not available?

Is Renu a clinical massage practice?

Yes. Renu is a health clinic offering registered massage therapy, lymphatic drainage, acupuncture and related treatments. Every session follows professional standards for draping, consent and boundaries.
