Green Shield massage therapy coverage
Green Shield massage therapy coverage: ZONE plans pay $20 to $50 a visit, up to $300 to $750 a year, with no referral; stockings are Medical Items.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
GreenShield covers massage therapy without a doctor's referral, as long as the therapist is registered with a regulator or a professional association GreenShield recognizes. On its individual ZONE plans, massage pays from $20 a visit and $300 a year on ZONE 1 up to $50 a visit and $750 a year on ZONE 7, with acupuncture as a separate practitioner. Compression stockings are claimed under Medical Items, and claims are generally due within 12 months.
GreenShield pays for massage therapy under its Professional Services and Registered Therapists benefit, with a fixed amount per visit and a yearly amount per practitioner. Two features set it apart from many plans: it says it does not need a physician’s referral for registered therapists, and on its personal ZONE plans the limit for medical items such as compression stockings grows the longer you stay on the plan.
What the ZONE plans pay for massage
GreenShield’s ZONE individual plans list chiropractors, massage therapists, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, chiropodists or podiatrists, dietitians, naturopaths and osteopaths together under one heading, but the yearly amount applies to each practitioner separately.
| ZONE plan | Per visit | Per year, per practitioner |
|---|---|---|
| ZONE 1 | $20 | $300 |
| ZONE 4 | $40 | $400 |
| ZONE 5 | $45 | $500 |
| ZONE 7 | $50 | $750, with $2,000 combined across practitioners |
These are dollar caps rather than percentages: the plan pays up to the per-visit amount for each eligible visit until the year’s amount is used. A $20 cap on ZONE 1, for example, reaches $300 after fifteen visits. On ZONE 7 the combined $2,000 only matters if you are seeing several kinds of practitioner heavily in the same year.
If your GreenShield coverage comes through an employer, the structure may look similar but the figures are your employer’s choice. Your group booklet or the GreenShield+ app has them.
Who counts as a registered therapist
GreenShield’s rule is in its FAQ: the practitioner must be licensed, certified and registered with their provincial regulatory agency, or be a registered member of a professional association recognized by GreenShield. In the same answer it states that physician referrals are not required for registered professionals and therapists.
In Alberta the first half of that sentence does not apply to massage, because the province has no regulatory college for massage therapy. Your therapist qualifies through association membership, so the useful question is whether GreenShield recognizes the association your therapist belongs to. Ask the clinic for the association name, then ask GreenShield.
Compression stockings under Medical Items
GreenShield’s ZONE comparison chart lists compression stockings among Medical Items, alongside braces, casts, mobility aids and prosthetics. The Medical Items maximum is separate from the Home Support Services maximum, and it increases with each year on the plan:
| ZONE plan | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | Year 4 and later |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZONE 1 | $1,000 | $1,500 | $2,000 | $2,500 |
| ZONE 4 | $2,000 | $3,000 | $4,000 | $5,000 |
| ZONE 5 | $2,000 | $4,000 | $6,000 | $6,000 |
| ZONE 7 | $3,000 | $5,000 | $8,000 | $8,000 |
These amounts are per person, per benefit category, per year. GreenShield’s public pages do not spell out the paperwork for a stocking claim, so before you buy, ask what prescription and receipt details it wants. For people with chronic lymphedema in Alberta, public funding through AADL may also apply; see our page on AADL funding for compression garments.
Claiming with GreenShield
GreenShield describes three ways to claim: your health care provider bills GreenShield directly, you submit through GreenShield+ online services or the mobile app, or you mail a paper claim form. If you submit yourself, you pay for the visit up front. GreenShield generally gives you 12 months from the date of service to submit, unless your policy says otherwise.
On direct billing, GreenShield is a participating carrier on providerConnect, a free portal clinics use to check a patient’s coverage and submit claims for immediate adjudication. It does not appear on the TELUS Health eClaims insurer list. Clinics differ in which portals they use, so it is worth asking at booking rather than at the front desk afterwards.
Using GreenShield at Renu
At Renu, massage therapy and lymphatic drainage are given by Registered Massage Therapists, and acupuncture is with Dr. Will Tanner. On the ZONE plans those are separate practitioners with separate yearly amounts. Meeghan Mackenzie, our founder, is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and Certified Compression Fitter if you need garments measured.
With a dollar cap per visit, your share depends mostly on the session price:
| Session at Renu | Price | ZONE 4 pays | ZONE 7 pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Massage, 45 min | $100 | $40 | $50 |
| Massage, 60 min | $120 | $40 | $50 |
| Massage, 75 min | $141 | $40 | $50 |
| Massage and lymphatic combination, 60 min | $130 | $40 | $50 |
Because the cap is the same whatever the length, some people on lower plans book longer sessions less often to stretch the year; others prefer shorter, frequent visits while an injury settles. Our page on annual maximums and per-visit limits walks through that choice. Sessions with our student practitioner are not RMT services, so check with GreenShield before relying on a claim.
Book online through Jane from the massage therapy page, the lymphatic drainage massage page or the acupuncture page.
Three things to confirm with GreenShield
- Your plan’s per-visit and yearly amounts, if you are on a group plan.
- That your therapist’s association is recognized for massage in Alberta.
- What a compression stocking claim needs, before you are fitted.
Questions people ask
Does GreenShield need a doctor's note for massage therapy?
GreenShield says physician referrals are not required for registered professionals and therapists on its individual plans. A group plan designed by an employer can set its own rule, so check your booklet if your coverage comes through work.
Is acupuncture covered on the same GreenShield limit as massage?
On the ZONE plans, acupuncturists and massage therapists are listed in the same Professional Services group, but the yearly amount is per practitioner, so each has its own. ZONE 7 adds a $2,000 combined cap across all of them in a year.
Can my clinic bill GreenShield directly?
GreenShield is one of the insurers that works with providerConnect, a free portal clinics use to check coverage and submit claims for immediate adjudication. GreenShield is not on the TELUS Health eClaims insurer list, so a clinic that only uses eClaims cannot bill it that way; ask the clinic which portals it uses.
Do GreenShield's Medical Items limits really increase each year?
Yes, on the ZONE plans they step up with each year you stay on the plan. ZONE 5, for example, allows $2,000 in year one, $4,000 in year two and $6,000 from year three, per person per benefit category.
