Your first Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage in Calgary: what to expect

Your first Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage in Calgary: Full BodyTox or TummyTox, health questions, a brisk but painless rhythm, a brief lighter feel.

By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read

Your first Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage at BodyTox by Renu starts with a choice: the 90-minute Full BodyTox, which includes a 20-minute infrared cocoon session, or the 45-minute TummyTox focused on the abdomen. Expect health questions first, then brisk, rhythmic strokes that move fluid toward the lymph node areas; it should feel firm, never painful. Most people feel lighter and need the washroom more for a while afterward, but the change is a temporary fluid shift, not fat loss or a detox.

First, pick your BodyTox

The first decision is which session to book, and it comes down to how much of you feels heavy and how much time you have. At BodyTox by Renu, the lymphatic body studio inside our West Hillhurst clinic, Brazilian lymphatic drainage comes in two forms:

Full BodyTox TummyTox
Length 90 minutes 45 minutes
Price $315 $225
Focus Legs, abdomen, arms and back The abdomen
Infrared cocoon 20-minute session included Not included
Suits Whole-body heaviness, or a first full experience Bloating around the middle, or a shorter visit

If you are unsure, the TummyTox is the gentler introduction: shorter, one area, and a good way to learn how your body responds before committing to the full session. A side-by-side of what each includes is on our Full BodyTox versus TummyTox page, and the minute-by-minute of the longer session is in what happens during a Full BodyTox.

The health questions before you lie down

Before any hands-on work, your practitioner asks about your health, because moving fluid is not safe for everyone. The Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding lymphatic drainage with blood clots or deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis or other infection, fever, heart disease, kidney failure or a recent stroke. Cedars-Sinai says it is not recommended for people with a heart condition, kidney problems or cellulitis, and the National Lymphedema Network lists acute infection, decompensated congestive heart failure and acute deep vein thrombosis as contraindications.

Brazilian drainage also has a few questions of its own:

  • Pregnancy. Tell us if you are or might be pregnant. Our page on Brazilian lymphatic drainage while pregnant explains why this changes the plan.
  • Your period. Abdominal work during menstruation is a personal choice; see Brazilian lymphatic drainage during your period.
  • Recent surgery. If you are recovering from liposuction, a tummy tuck or another procedure, tell us before you book. Our post-op lymphatic drainage sessions are the ones planned around healing tissue and your surgeon’s instructions.
  • Medications. Mention water pills, heart or blood pressure medicine and blood thinners.

The full list is on who should not have Brazilian lymphatic drainage.

Because both sessions spend real time on the belly, your practitioner will explain the abdominal work and check you are comfortable before starting. You stay draped, with only the area being treated uncovered, and the groin node area is treated only with your consent, as the Cleveland Clinic describes for lymphatic drainage generally. You can ask for lighter pressure, a different area or a pause at any time. Our page on consent for sensitive areas goes through this region by region.

Brisk, firm, rhythmic, and never painful

Brazilian lymphatic drainage feels livelier than clinical manual lymphatic drainage. Clinical MLD, as the National Lymphedema Network describes it, is gentle pressure and skin stretching on bare skin, with a working phase and a relaxation phase, starting near the trunk. The Brazilian approach used at BodyTox follows the same direction of travel, starting at lymph node areas and moving fluid toward them, as the Cleveland Clinic describes, but with a firmer hand and a faster, rhythmic pace.

Firm is the right word; painful is not. If any stroke hurts, say so, and your practitioner will ease off. Our page on whether Brazilian lymphatic drainage hurts or leaves marks covers the sensation and the parts of a Full BodyTox that can leave temporary marks. The differences from clinical MLD are set out in manual versus Brazilian lymphatic drainage.

How to prepare on the day

A little preparation makes a first session more comfortable:

  • Eat lightly. A heavy meal right before abdominal work is uncomfortable. Our page on what to eat and drink before a BodyTox has the details.
  • Drink water through the day, and expect to visit the washroom soon after.
  • Wear easy clothing that is easy to slip back on afterward.
  • Allow time. For a Full BodyTox, plan around 90 minutes plus a few minutes to settle and dress.
  • Book under the right category. BodyTox treatments sit under their own categories in Jane; how to book BodyTox in Jane walks you through it.

What results to expect, honestly

Most people leave feeling lighter, with a less puffy middle, and that feeling lasts a short time. Cedars-Sinai explains that for healthy people there is no evidence lymphatic drainage causes weight loss, though it can give a temporary trimming effect by moving fluid through the body. The Cleveland Clinic notes that some people feel fatigue, headaches or nausea afterward.

We do not describe BodyTox as a detox or as fat removal. The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority requires robust evidence for claims about manual lymphatic drainage and has challenged claims that treatments remove toxins, and we hold our own wording to that standard. Who does Brazilian drainage at Renu

Three practitioners provide Brazilian lymphatic drainage at BodyTox by Renu. Aisha Mendes is a licensed esthetician with a CIDESCO Diploma and a Certified Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Practitioner. Meeghan Mackenzie, our founder, is a Registered Massage Therapist, Certified Lymphedema Therapist and Certified Compression Fitter. Sasha Bernard is a Registered Massage Therapist who lists lymphatic drainage therapy among her credentials. We are at 19 Street NW in West Hillhurst, with free street parking on 19 Street and weekend hours from 10 am to 5 pm.

When to see a doctor instead

Brazilian lymphatic drainage is a wellness treatment, not a way to manage unexplained swelling. NCCIH advises against using massage to postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem. See a doctor rather than booking if swelling is new and in one leg, comes with calf pain, warmth or redness, or comes with fever or feeling unwell, and speak to your doctor first if you have heart or kidney disease.

Questions people ask

Do I have to undress fully for a TummyTox?

No. Only the area being worked needs to be uncovered, and the rest of you stays draped. For a TummyTox that is the abdomen and waist, and many people keep their underwear on throughout.

Will one session flatten my stomach?

It may make your middle feel and look less bloated for a short while, because some fluid moves on. Cedars-Sinai notes the effect in healthy people is a temporary trimming effect, and there is no evidence it causes weight loss.

Can I go back to work after a BodyTox?

Yes, nothing about it stops you working, though many people feel relaxed or a little tired and need the washroom more often. If you can, book a Full BodyTox at a time when you can take the rest of the day gently.

Which BodyTox practitioner should I book with?

Aisha Mendes, Meeghan Mackenzie and Sasha Bernard all provide Brazilian lymphatic drainage at Renu, so choose the time that suits you. If you have a lymphatic condition such as lymphedema, Meeghan, our Certified Lymphedema Therapist, is the one to see.
