By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
The Drift & Drain Signature Lymphatic Facial is a 60-minute, $160 treatment with esthetician Aisha Mendes at BodyTox by Renu in West Hillhurst. It starts with a full upper-body lymphatic ritual over the face, neck and décolleté, then moves into a mini facial with cleansing, exfoliation, sculpting massage and cooling cryo gua sha. It is the facial to book when puffiness and a soft jawline bother you more than your skin does.
The Drift & Drain Signature Lymphatic Facial is our hour for a puffy face. It costs $160 for 60 minutes with Aisha Mendes, licensed esthetician, at BodyTox by Renu. Unlike a skin-first facial, it spends its opening and most of its time on lymphatic drainage of the face, neck and décolleté, then finishes with a mini facial, sculpting massage and a cold gua sha stone. If you came here looking for face sculpting massage or a gua sha facial in Calgary, this is the treatment on our menu that matches.
How the hour is put together
Drainage comes first and skincare second. The session runs in two parts.
- The upper-body lymphatic ritual. Slow, light drainage over the face, neck and décolleté. Cleveland Clinic describes the logic of this kind of work: light pressure that first stimulates the lymph node areas, such as the neck, then coaxes fluid from swollen tissue toward them. That is why the ritual covers the neck and chest rather than the face alone.
- The mini facial. Cleansing and exfoliation, then a sculpting massage along the cheekbones and jaw, and cooling cryo gua sha to finish. Our page on what cryo gua sha does in the Drift & Drain explains the tool and why it is used cold.
The skin consultation at the start is short but important: it is where you mention recent Botox, filler, a peel or a facial procedure, so Aisha can adjust pressure and avoid treated areas.
Who it suits
It suits people whose main complaint is fluid rather than skin. Typical reasons to book:
- puffy eyes or a swollen-looking face in the morning
- a jawline that looks softer after salty meals, travel or poor sleep
- wanting to look rested before a photo, an interview or a wedding
- liking facial massage more than extractions and masks
If your skin is congested and you want extractions, the Silk & Soul is the better fit. If you are pregnant, Aisha offers a 75-minute Pre-natal Drift and Drain ($170) adapted for pregnancy; our page on the prenatal lymphatic facial explains how it differs.
What the research says about sculpting and de-puffing
The honest answer is that the evidence is small but points in a helpful direction. Two studies are worth knowing about.
| Study | What was done | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 randomized trial, 34 women aged 20 to 50 | Gua sha or a facial roller at home, 10 minutes, five times a week, for 8 weeks | Facial contour measurements fell by 2.23 to 2.40 mm with gua sha and 2.75 to 3.26 mm with the roller |
| 2020 randomized trial, 26 patients after jaw surgery | Six sessions of manual lymphatic drainage added to usual care | 3D scans showed swelling going down faster, but the difference from usual care alone was not statistically significant |
Two things follow from that. First, contour changes measured in millimetres came from eight weeks of near-daily home use, not one appointment, so a single Drift & Drain is a short-term de-puff, not a reshaping. Second, even in surgical swelling, the measurable effect of drainage on the face was modest. We would rather you book this facial knowing that than expect your face to look different for weeks. Our page on whether a lymphatic facial can define your jawline looks at this question on its own.
What you can expect is a calmer, less puffy face soon after treatment, with the change often continuing over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Keeping the result going at home
The facial helps most when the things that cause puffiness are also handled. Cleveland Clinic lists fluid build-up in the thin tissue around the eyes, salty food, short sleep and allergies as common causes, and notes that some bags come from fat pads, bone structure or skin laxity that run in families and do not respond to massage at all. Its home suggestions line up with how the facial ends:
- a cold, damp cloth over the eyes for a few minutes, because cold narrows blood vessels and reduces swelling
- an extra pillow at night so fluid does not pool around the eyes while you sleep
- easing off salt the evening before an event
For the day of your facial: drink water, rest, keep to a walk rather than a hard workout, and skip alcohol.
When to check with your doctor first
Lymphatic work is gentle, but it is not for everyone. Cleveland Clinic advises against lymphatic drainage massage for people with blood clots or deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis or another active infection, fever, heart disease, kidney failure or a history of stroke. It also notes that some people feel tired, headachy or nauseated afterwards, which usually passes.
Puffiness is sometimes a medical problem rather than a cosmetic one. Cleveland Clinic passes on an ophthalmologist’s advice that eye swelling lasting longer than 24 to 48 hours should be seen by an eye care professional. See a doctor rather than booking a facial if your swelling is new and on one side, painful, hot or red, comes with a change in vision, or appears alongside swelling in your legs or shortness of breath.

Questions people ask
Is the Drift & Drain the same as a gua sha facial?
Gua sha is one part of it, near the end. Most of the hour is hands-on lymphatic drainage over the neck, chest and face, followed by a short facial. The gua sha stone is used cold, to calm and finish, rather than as the main technique.
Should I book the Drift & Drain in the morning or the evening?
Many people are puffiest when they wake up, so a morning or midday booking lets you see the change on the day you feel it most. If the goal is a calm night's sleep, an evening booking works just as well.
Can I have the Drift & Drain after jaw or facial surgery?
Only once your surgeon has cleared you for facial massage and told you what to avoid. Post-surgical facial swelling is usually better handled in post-op lymphatic drainage sessions with a therapist who works with surgical recovery. Tell us what was done and when, and we will point you to the right booking.
How long before an event should I book it?
The day before or the morning of is a common choice, because puffiness can drop right away and keep settling over the following day or two. If you have never had a lymphatic facial, try one a few weeks earlier so you know how your skin responds.
