Does a lymphatic facial help fine lines and ageing skin?
Does a lymphatic facial help fine lines and ageing skin? It can make skin look rested and less puffy for a while; no study shows it reduces wrinkles.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
A lymphatic facial can make ageing skin look fresher and less puffy for a day or two, and regular facial massage has small studies behind it for skin blood flow, cheek fullness and sleep. No study we found shows that facial massage reduces wrinkles. The things with strong evidence for fine lines are daily sun protection, a retinoid used over several months, and collagen-stimulating devices that take three to six months to show, so treat a facial as a supportive part of the routine, not the centre of it.
What a lymphatic facial does for ageing skin
The visible change is mostly fluid and circulation. Puffiness around the eyes and jaw makes a face look tired, and a tired face often reads as an older one. A lymphatic facial moves that fluid toward the neck, and the massage brings colour to the skin. The result is a face that looks rested and a little more defined, strongest on the day and fading over the next day or two.
That is a real effect, and it is why many people in their 40s and 50s enjoy facials. It is also a temporary one. Lines that are there when your face is relaxed and well-rested are a matter of collagen, elastin and sun history, and fluid has little to do with them.
What the research on facial massage has found
There is a small body of research on facial massage and exercise. Each study is modest, and together they point to short-term and well-being benefits rather than wrinkle reduction.
| Study | What was done | What changed | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miyaji et al., 2018 | 5 minutes of facial roller massage; then 5 weeks of daily use | Skin blood flow up for at least 10 minutes; better vessel response to heat after 5 weeks | Measured circulation, not lines |
| Alam et al., 2018 | 20 weeks of facial exercises in 16 women, average age about 54 | Upper and lower cheek fullness improved; estimated age fell from 50.8 to 48.1 years | No control group; 11 of 27 dropped out |
| Porcheron et al., 2024 | 2 months of daily facial self-massage in 62 women | Perceived sleep quality improved by 20.2%; daytime sleepiness fell by 31.2% | No wrinkle measures; self-reported |
The sleep study is the one we find most interesting for this age group. Women with daily tiredness and sleep difficulties who massaged their faces every day for two months reported better sleep and well-being. Better rest does not erase lines, but it changes how a face looks in the morning, and it is a fair reason to value the ritual.
What none of these studies measured, or showed, is fewer or shallower wrinkles.
What has strong evidence for fine lines
If your main goal is fewer fine lines over the years, three things carry most of the weight, and none of them happens on our table.
Sun protection, every day. The American Academy of Dermatology says sunburn can cause long-lasting skin damage that raises the risk of skin cancer and premature ageing, and advises a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on all skin not covered by clothing. In Calgary that includes winter: the World Health Organization notes that fresh snow almost doubles a person’s UV exposure.
A retinoid, used for months. Cleveland Clinic explains that retinol thickens the skin, slows the breakdown of collagen and boosts collagen production, which helps soften fine lines. It also says it usually takes several months of use to notice a difference in wrinkles, and that skin can look worse before it improves.
Collagen-stimulating treatments, if you choose them. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery explains that devices using radiofrequency, laser or ultrasound heat the deeper skin to prompt collagen, and that these results often take at least three to six months to appear.
Where each facial fits in an ageing-skin routine
Think of a lymphatic facial as the part of the routine that makes you look and feel rested, and that gives your skin a professional cleanse and a check-in. At Renu, all facials are with Aisha Mendes, licensed esthetician and lymphatic facialist, at BodyTox by Renu inside our 19 Street NW clinic.
- Drift & Drain (60 minutes, $160). Most of the time goes to lymphatic work over the face, neck and décolleté, finishing with cryo gua sha. Choose it when puffiness and a tired look are what bother you.
- Silk & Soul (75 minutes, $180). Cleansing, exfoliation, gentle extractions and a mask, with massage of the face, scalp, neck and décolleté and a lower-leg massage. Choose it when texture and dullness matter as much as puffiness.
- Brazilian Lymphatic Drift (90 minutes, $245). Full-body Brazilian drainage and the Drift & Drain facial, with vacuum RF therapy. It is the only facial that includes radiofrequency; given the three-to-six-month timescale for collagen, treat it as a slow addition rather than a quick fix. Our page on vacuum RF therapy explains the device.
Between visits, the habits in the studies above, a few minutes of gentle facial massage and sunscreen every morning, are worth more than an extra booking.
When skin changes need a doctor, not a facial
Ageing skin also changes in ways that need a medical eye. See your doctor or a dermatologist rather than booking a facial for:
- A new spot, or one that looks different from your other moles
- A spot that is changing in size, shape or colour, or that itches or bleeds (the American Academy of Dermatology’s warning signs for melanoma)
- Facial swelling that is new, one-sided, painful or comes with other symptoms
Sun damage builds over decades, and a skin check is part of looking after ageing skin.

Questions people ask
How often would I need a facial to see an anti-ageing benefit?
No study sets a facial schedule for ageing skin. The research that showed changes used daily self-massage or exercises over weeks to months, which suggests the home routine matters more than how often you book. Many clients use a professional facial every four to six weeks as a reset and keep the daily habits in between.
Is a lymphatic facial better for ageing skin than a regular facial?
Neither has been shown to reduce wrinkles. The lymphatic version spends more time on drainage and massage, which suits puffiness and a tired look; a facial built around exfoliation suits dullness and texture. Our Silk & Soul does both.
Can I have a lymphatic facial if I use a retinoid for wrinkles?
Usually, yes. Gentle drainage is not a problem for most retinoid users; exfoliation and the lactic acid peel are where irritation can build. Tell Aisha what you use, and see our page on stopping retinol before a facial.
Does the vacuum RF in the Brazilian Lymphatic Drift work on the face?
Radiofrequency devices heat the deeper skin to prompt collagen, and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says collagen-based results often take at least three to six months to appear, usually after more than one treatment. One session is a start, not a result.
