Can lymphatic drainage help numbness after surgery?
Can lymphatic drainage help numbness after surgery? Not directly: feeling returns as nerves recover. It can ease swelling, and numb skin needs care with heat.

Not directly. Numbness after liposuction, a tummy tuck or breast surgery comes from small skin nerves being disturbed during the operation, and feeling returns as those nerves recover, over weeks to a year or more; we found no study showing lymphatic drainage speeds that up. What it can do is ease the swelling around the area, which may make it feel less tight. Numb skin also cannot warn you about heat, cold or pressure, so take extra care with heat packs and saunas.
Numb skin is one of the stranger parts of recovering from body surgery. You can see your abdomen, thighs or chest, but touching them feels distant, or like touching through a glove. People often ask whether lymphatic drainage will bring the feeling back. The honest answer is that time does most of that work, but lymphatic care can still help you feel more comfortable while it happens, provided the numbness is handled safely.
Why the skin goes numb
Numbness happens because the small nerves that supply the skin are disturbed during surgery.
Surgeons list this openly as a known effect. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) includes changes in skin sensation that may persist among the risks of liposuction, and numbness or other changes in skin sensation among the risks of a tummy tuck. MedlinePlus lists nerve damage that can cause pain or numbness in part of the belly as a risk of abdominal wall surgery.
How long feeling takes to return
It depends on the operation, and the range is wide.
| Procedure | What the sources describe |
|---|---|
| Liposuction | Numbness or tingling, and pain, for weeks after surgery (MedlinePlus) |
| Tummy tuck | Numbness expected for about a year; below the belly button takes longest and may not fully return (plastic surgeons, Aesthetic Society Q&A) |
For a tummy tuck, one surgeon answering patient questions for the Aesthetic Society explained that the area below the belly button can take more than a year to show much change, and that full feeling there often does not return, while other areas usually regain their original sensation. Another described numbness, swelling, firmness and scar redness as expected for about a year.
As feeling comes back, you may notice tingling, itching, zaps or patches that feel oddly sensitive. Mention them at your follow-ups, especially if they are getting worse rather than settling.
What lymphatic drainage can and cannot do
Lymphatic drainage does not repair nerves. We did not find any study showing it brings sensation back sooner, so we would not book it for that reason alone.
What it is studied for is swelling. In a randomised trial after jaw surgery, lymphatic drainage produced faster and greater reduction in measured swelling than a placebo technique, though patients did not rate their own swelling or pain differently. Post-surgical numbness and swelling often sit in the same area, and a tight, swollen abdomen can feel more uncomfortable and strange than a softer one.
So the realistic benefits are:
- less swelling and tightness in and around the numb area;
- a chance to have the area looked at regularly by someone trained in post-surgical tissue;
- gentle touch that is comfortable to receive while sensation is reduced.
The Cleveland Clinic notes that a collection of blood, a hematoma, can cause tingling or numbness depending on its size and where it sits. That is one more reason a growing, firm swelling in a numb area should go to your surgeon rather than be massaged.
Numb skin cannot protect itself
This is the safety point people miss. Skin with reduced feeling cannot warn you that something is too hot, too cold or pressing too hard.
- Heat. The Aesthetic Society advises waiting at least six weeks before sun and heat exposure after liposuction. Over numb skin, take extra care even after that: avoid heat packs, hot water bottles and heated massage tools directly on the area.
- Cold. Ice packs can damage skin you cannot feel. Use them only as your surgeon directs, wrapped, and for short periods.
- Pressure. Firm tools, deep massage and tight straps can bruise or mark skin that gives you no warning. Check the skin visually.
- Saunas. An infrared session warms the whole body. Ask your surgeon when heat is allowed, and if you go ahead later in recovery, keep sessions short and check the numb areas afterward.
Tracking the change yourself
Because sensation returns slowly, it is easy to miss progress. A simple record helps you and your surgeon see the trend:
- once a month, lightly touch the area with a fingertip or a soft brush with your eyes closed, and note where you can and cannot feel it;
- mark the edge of the numb patch on a photo, or describe it against landmarks such as the belly button or scar;
- note new sensations, such as tingling or itching, and where they appear.
A numb area that is slowly shrinking, or tingling that comes and goes as feeling returns, fits the expected pattern. Take the record to your surgeon’s follow-up appointments.
When numbness needs your surgeon
Some kinds of numbness are not part of normal recovery. Call your surgeon if you notice:
- numbness that is spreading or getting worse, rather than slowly shrinking;
- new weakness, or numbness in a hand, foot or leg away from the surgical area;
- numbness together with a swelling that is growing, hard or increasingly painful;
- fever, pus or red streaks near an incision;
- calf pain or swelling in one leg.
For sudden one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, chest pain or shortness of breath, call 911.
Post-op care for numb areas at Renu
At Renu, pre and post-op lymphatic drainage is booked through Jane in 30-minute ($105), 45-minute ($115) and 60-minute ($140) sessions, or 90 minutes ($210) after multiple surgeries. If you have had a tummy tuck, our tummy tuck recovery guide covers the wider plan. Show us where the skin is numb at your first visit, so the pressure stays light, the skin is watched rather than relying on your feedback alone, and heat stays away from those areas until your surgeon says otherwise.
Questions people ask
Is tingling or zapping a good sign after surgery?
Tingling is common while sensation changes; MedlinePlus mentions numbness or tingling for weeks after liposuction. Tell your surgeon about burning pain, worsening numbness or any weakness, since those need a check.
Will the numb area below my belly button ever feel normal?
Often it improves a great deal, but not always completely. A plastic surgeon answering patients for the Aesthetic Society said the area below the belly button takes longest, can take more than a year to show much change, and often does not fully return.
Can I massage numb skin myself?
Gentle self-care is usually fine once incisions have healed and your surgeon agrees, but use light pressure and look at the skin as you go, because you cannot rely on feeling to tell you when you are pressing too hard. Skip heated tools and hot packs over numb areas.
Does numbness change how the therapist works?
Yes. Your therapist relies more on watching the skin and asking you, keeps pressure light and avoids anything hot. Point out the numb areas at the start so they are mapped before the session begins.
