Alberta Blue Cross individual plans and massage therapy
Alberta Blue Cross individual plans and massage therapy: Blue Choice and Blue Assured pay $50 to $110 a visit, within $350 to $750 a year, depending on level.
By The Renu lymphatic and massage team · 5 min read
Alberta Blue Cross's personal plans cover massage therapy from the Enhanced level up, not at Basic. On Blue Choice, massage pays up to $50 a visit ($60 at Premium) within a combined chiropractic, physiotherapy and massage maximum of $350 to $600 a year; on Blue Assured it pays $50 a visit ($110 at Premium) within $350 to $750 a year. Acupuncture only appears at the Enhanced+ and Premium levels, and lymphatic drainage by a massage therapist is paid from the massage benefit, since no plan lists it separately.
If you buy your own health coverage in Alberta, massage therapy is in Alberta Blue Cross’s personal plans from the Enhanced level up. What changes between plans and levels is how much each visit pays and how big the shared yearly pot is. Below are the published figures, a worked example using real session prices, and the details that matter if you plan to use lymphatic drainage, acupuncture or compression stockings.
Blue Choice or Blue Assured: the difference that matters first
Alberta Blue Cross sells two main personal plans for adults, and they are underwritten differently.
- Blue Choice is medically underwritten: you answer questions about your medical history when you apply. Individuals and families aged 64 and under can apply, and coverage continues past 65 once you are accepted. If you later take a job with benefits, you can move to Blue Choice Portability and come back within 30 days of the employer plan ending without another medical review.
- Blue Assured asks no medical questions. All you need is an Alberta provincial health card, and it is open to people of all ages.
Both let you pick Basic, Enhanced, Enhanced+ or Premium separately for extended health, prescription drugs and optional dental. Your choices apply to everyone on the plan.
Massage therapy figures by level
These are the paramedical amounts Alberta Blue Cross publishes for each personal plan. A dash means the level does not include it.
| Plan and level | Massage per visit | Chiro, physio and massage combined per year |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Choice Basic | – | – |
| Blue Choice Enhanced | $50 | $350 |
| Blue Choice Enhanced+ | $50 | $500 |
| Blue Choice Premium | $60 | $600 |
| Blue Assured Basic | – | – |
| Blue Assured Enhanced | $50 | $350 |
| Blue Assured Enhanced+ | $50 | $500 |
| Blue Assured Premium | $110 | $750 |
Two details are easy to miss. First, the yearly figure is a combined maximum: chiropractic and physiotherapy visits draw from the same pot as massage. Second, every level sits under an overall extended health maximum of $5,000 a year, or $7,500 on Blue Assured Premium.
The Young Adult plan, built for people coming off a parent’s plan, also lists massage therapy among its paramedical benefits with choosable coverage amounts; its comparison table sets the figures.
What a year of massage looks like on each level
Per-visit caps matter more than people expect. At Renu, a 60-minute massage is $120 and a 60-minute classic lymphatic drainage massage is $130. If massage were your only use of the combined benefit:
- Enhanced, either plan: $50 back per visit, so the $350 maximum lasts seven visits. You pay $70 a visit on a $120 massage.
- Blue Choice Premium: $60 back per visit, ten visits to reach $600.
- Blue Assured Premium: up to $110 back per visit, so the $750 maximum covers six 60-minute visits in full at that rate, with $90 left toward a seventh. You pay $10 on each $120 massage until then.
Any chiropractic or physiotherapy you use that year shortens those counts. Our page on annual maximums and per-visit limits shows how to run this arithmetic on any plan.
Acupuncture and compression stockings
Acupuncture sits in a different group from massage on these plans, and only at the upper levels.
| Benefit | Blue Choice (Basic / Enh / Enh+ / Prem) | Blue Assured (Basic / Enh / Enh+ / Prem) |
|---|---|---|
| Acupuncturist per visit | – / – / $50 / $50 | – / – / $50 / $110 |
| Combined yearly maximum for that group | – / – / $350 / $350 | – / – / $350 / $650 |
| Surgical stockings per year | – / $200 / $200 / $200 | – / $200 / $200 / $250 |
On Blue Choice, acupuncture shares its $350 with audiologists, homeopaths, osteopaths, naturopaths and occupational therapists. On Blue Assured, the same kinds of practitioners share the pot, with dietitians added at Premium. If you have lymphedema or wear compression after surgery, the surgical stockings line is where garments usually fall; read the policy wording for any prescription requirement before you buy.
Lymphatic drainage on a personal plan
None of these plans names lymphatic drainage, so a lymphatic session with a Registered Massage Therapist is paid from the massage line, within the same per-visit and yearly limits as any other massage. That has a practical consequence after surgery: if your surgeon suggests a series of post-op sessions close together, an Enhanced-level maximum may run out partway through. Our page on whether lymphatic drainage massage is covered by insurance explains the wider rules.
Changing levels and claiming
You can raise your coverage level at any time, effective the first of the next month, and lower it only after 24 months, so it is worth choosing deliberately. Alberta Blue Cross also offers direct billing for eligible massage therapy claims to individual plan members, where the provider is registered; otherwise you pay and claim through the member site or app. If you are 65 or older, the province’s Coverage for Seniors program works alongside these plans differently; see our page on Alberta’s Coverage for Seniors and massage therapy.
Using your personal plan at Renu
At Renu you can book massage therapy from $80 for 30 minutes to $157 for 90 minutes, lymphatic drainage massage from $95, and acupuncture with Dr. Will Tanner, from $85 for a 45-minute follow-up to $150 for a 90-minute initial consultation and treatment. Book through Jane, and match the session length to your plan’s per-visit amount if keeping your share low matters to you.
Questions people ask
Which Alberta Blue Cross personal plan pays the most per massage?
On the published tables, Blue Assured Premium pays up to $110 per massage visit, within a $750 yearly maximum shared with chiropractic and physiotherapy. Blue Choice Premium pays up to $60 a visit within $600 a year. Compare total cost, not just the per-visit figure, because premiums differ by plan, level and age.
Can I raise my massage coverage partway through the year?
Yes. Alberta Blue Cross says you can increase your levels at any time, effective the first of the next month, and lower them only after 24 months. Your choice of level applies to everyone on your plan.
Does the Basic level cover any massage?
No. On both Blue Choice and Blue Assured, the Basic extended health level shows no amount for massage therapists, chiropractors or physiotherapists. You need Enhanced or higher for massage.
Can my massage therapist bill Alberta Blue Cross directly on a personal plan?
Alberta Blue Cross offers direct billing for eligible massage therapy claims for individual health plan members as well as group members, where the provider is registered for it. Otherwise you pay and submit the claim yourself.
