Renu offers table Thai massage: stretching, acupressure and rhythmic compression performed on the massage table while you stay fully clothed, given by a Registered Massage Therapist. It is booked as a regular massage (60 min $120, 75 min $141, 90 min $157), with no oil, so wear loose, stretchy clothes. It is not recommended in pregnancy, and people with heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes or cancer should check with their doctor first.

Table Thai massage in Calgary is available at Renu as part of our regular massage menu. It brings the stretching, acupressure and rhythmic compression of Thai massage onto a massage table, and you stay fully clothed for the whole session. It is given by a Registered Massage Therapist and booked like any other massage. Below is how it compares with mat-based Thai massage, what to wear, what it costs, what the research shows and who should choose something else.

How table Thai differs from traditional mat Thai

The ingredients are the same; the surface and the setting change. Cleveland Clinic describes traditional Thai massage as passive stretching and yoga-like positions, with the therapist using their hands, elbows, forearms and feet to guide you, typically over about 90 minutes on a floor mat, with no oil and no undressing.

At Renu, the same ideas are adapted to a massage table:

  • You lie on a table rather than a floor mat, which is easier on stiff knees and hips and simpler to get on and off.
  • You stay fully clothed, as in traditional Thai, and no oil is used.
  • The work blends three elements: stretching, acupressure and rhythmic compression, aimed at improving flexibility and restoring energy.
  • It is given by a Registered Massage Therapist, so the session can be adapted to a sore back, a stiff hip or any condition you mention.

For a detailed look at the movements themselves, see our page on the table Thai massage technique.

What to wear and how to prepare

Wear what you would wear to a gentle yoga class. Loose, stretchy clothing lets your therapist move your hips, shoulders and spine through a full range without fabric pulling.

  • Good choices: leggings or track pants, a soft t-shirt or long-sleeved top, socks if your feet get cold.
  • Avoid: jeans, belts, stiff fabrics, shorts that ride up when your hip is bent, and jewellery.
  • Before you arrive: eat lightly; a big meal and abdominal compression do not mix well.
  • Tell us: about joint replacements, recent injuries, hypermobility or any position that is uncomfortable for you.

Prices and choosing a length

Table Thai sits on our standard massage price list, so there is no extra charge for the style.

Session length Price Suits
60 min $120 A full-body sequence at a steady pace
75 min $141 Full body, with extra time on stiff hips or shoulders
90 min $157 The closest to a traditional-length Thai session

Because Thai-style work moves through the whole body in sequence, 60 minutes is a sensible minimum. If you have had traditional Thai massage before and liked the unhurried pace, 90 minutes is the nearest match. Our RMTs’ massage receipts apply as for any other massage; check your plan before claiming.

Thai massage studies on pain and stress

The evidence on Thai massage is small but consistent for pain. A 2015 systematic review found six studies of traditional Thai massage in people with chronic pain. All of them reported reductions in pain from before to after treatment, ranging from 25% to 80%, along with improvements in disability, perceived muscle tension, flexibility and anxiety. The benefit appeared to last for up to 15 weeks, though the authors called for more research comparing it with control treatments.

A single session can also shift how stressed the body is. In a trial of 36 people with back pain linked to muscle trigger points, one 30-minute session of traditional Thai massage increased heart rate variability, a marker of a calmer nervous system, and reduced pain, anxiety and muscle tension compared with resting on a bed.

Those studies looked at traditional Thai massage. Our table version uses the same three elements, but no study has tested a table-based version specifically, so we present these findings as a guide rather than a promise.

Who should choose a different massage

Thai-style stretching moves joints further than most massage styles, so a few groups should choose something else or check first.

  • Pregnancy: Cleveland Clinic states that Thai massage is not recommended for those who are pregnant. Book a prenatal massage instead, which is positioned and adapted for each stage.
  • Check with your doctor first if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes or cancer, as Cleveland Clinic advises.
  • Recent injury or surgery, a joint replacement, or a joint that dislocates easily: tell us, and we will leave out or soften the stretches involved, or suggest another style.

Stop the session at any time if a stretch causes sharp pain, pins and needles, dizziness or chest discomfort, and seek medical care if chest pain or shortness of breath does not settle. NCCIH notes that serious side effects from massage are rare, but have been reported with vigorous techniques and in more vulnerable people, such as older adults.

Questions people ask

Do I need to book table Thai massage separately?

It sits on our regular massage price list, so you book a massage for the length you want and note that you would like table Thai. If you are unsure whether it suits you, call and we will help you choose.

Can I mix table Thai with oil massage in one session?

You can talk it through with your therapist. Because table Thai is done fully clothed, most people book it as a session of its own and keep oil massage for another visit.

Will table Thai massage help me become more flexible?

People often feel looser afterwards, and studies of traditional Thai massage report improvements in flexibility alongside pain relief. Lasting change in flexibility still comes from your own regular stretching and movement.

Is table Thai massage a good choice if I do not like being undressed?

Yes. It is one of the few massage styles designed to be done in your clothes, which suits people who prefer not to undress for any reason.
