Does lymphatic drainage remove toxins?
Does lymphatic drainage remove toxins? It keeps your body's clean-up crew moving: lymph carries waste to the nodes; your liver and kidneys finish the job.

Yes, in the way your body was designed to. Your lymphatic system is your body's clean-up crew: it carries away excess fluid, proteins, cell debris, bacteria and other waste, filters it through your lymph nodes and returns what's left to your bloodstream, where your liver and kidneys finish the job. Lymphatic drainage helps keep that flow moving, which is why so many clients leave feeling lighter, clearer and refreshed.
What lymph really carries
Every day, fluid and proteins seep out of your blood vessels into the tissues. Your veins reabsorb most of the fluid, but about 100 grams of protein leaks out daily that only your lymphatic system can carry home. Lymph also picks up:
- Excess fluid from the tissues
- Proteins too large for the veins to reabsorb
- Dead and damaged cells
- Bacteria, viruses and other foreign particles
- Fats absorbed from your gut
All of that passes through your lymph nodes, the checkpoints in your lymphatic city, where immune cells clear out anything that doesn’t belong. Then the lymph empties into your bloodstream just behind your collarbones.
Where does it all go?
The Chikly Method describes lymph as carrying away the toxins, germs and large molecules the veins can’t take back, including trapped proteins and fats in the tissues. As it passes through the lymph nodes, waste and germs are held there for your immune cells to deal with. In his episode on the lymphatic system, Dr. Andrew Huberman describes the same thing: lymph clears cellular waste and fluid from your organs, and the nodes are where viruses, bacteria and other invaders are evaluated and fought off.
What’s left returns to your bloodstream just behind your collarbones. From there, your liver and kidneys filter it and send it out of the body. That’s why many clients need the washroom soon after a session: the fluid we move leaves through your kidneys. Nothing comes out through your skin.
When the system slows down
Lymph has no heart to pump it. Stress, fatigue, emotional strain, long days sitting still, travel and surgery can all slow it down. When lymph stagnates, cells aren’t supplied and cleared as well, and waste lingers in the tissue. Many people feel that as heaviness, puffiness and a sluggish, foggy, run-down feeling.
Lymphatic drainage helps restart that flow, encouraging the lymph vessels to contract and moving fluid toward the nodes. Research has focused mostly on lymphedema and recovery after surgery so far, and there’s still much to learn about how drainage affects a healthy body. What we can tell you is what our clients describe, session after session: lighter, clearer and more like themselves.
Why it can still feel like a reset
Why do so many people walk out feeling lighter and clearer? A few reasons:
- Less fluid sitting in the tissue, so legs, belly and face feel less heavy and puffy
- A calmer nervous system, thanks to the slow, rhythmic touch
- An hour of stillness, which most of us rarely give ourselves
Those are real effects, and they’re plenty to feel good about.
Supporting your body’s own clean-up
- Hydrate: lymph is about 96% water
- Move: walking and gentle exercise pump lymph through the deeper vessels
- Breathe deeply: slow belly breathing helps draw lymph up through your trunk
- Eat simply: fewer salty, highly processed meals mean less fluid for your body to manage
From Renu’s treatment room
We hear “I need to detox” a lot, and we understand the feeling behind it: heavy, puffy, stuck. Session after session, our clients tell us they feel clearer, lighter and more energised. We help your body move what it’s been holding onto, calm your nervous system and send you home feeling renewed. Your liver and kidneys take it from there.

Questions people ask
Why do I feel so much better afterward?
Because fluid has moved out of your tissues and your nervous system has had an hour of deep rest. Both are real and both are worth having.
Do lymph nodes filter anything at all?
Yes. The Cleveland Clinic describes lymph nodes clearing damaged cells and cancer cells from lymph and storing immune cells that attack bacteria. That is immune filtering, and it happens continuously.
Should I drink water after a session?
Yes, it is a good habit. Your kidneys pass the fluid the session moved over the next day or two, and staying well hydrated supports that, along with everything else your body does.
